Gilbert McWilliam Caldwell, Prince Edward Island
« on: Tuesday 26 September 17 19:20 BST (UK) »
Hello all, I have recently discovered my ancestor (Gilbert McWilliam Caldwell) in a passenger list sailing from Glasgow to Halifax, Nova Scotia on 16 April 1927 and his destination being Paynter Farm, Kensington, PEI. I have been finding it difficult to track down whether he married and had children and when and where he died. He was born in 1905 in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland to James Caldwell and Margaret McWilliam. Can anyone help or is there any descendants out there?

When Gilbert came to Canada.....

On the same passenger manifest was the family of a William Woodington. Among his children was a daughter Winnie age 20. The family had the same destination as Gilbert....Mr Leslie Woodington, Paynter Farm, Kensington, PEI. There was also one other person from Johnstone going to the same destination, an Angus Macleod.

Local newspapers:
Column on the left...1939, looks like he was opening a bake shop in Kensington

Right hand column...says Gilbert is joining the armed forces - Nov 1940.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ksd/

Under "Kensington and Vicinity" - says Mr Gilbert Caldwell of the RCAF is spending the week in Kensington with his wife and family.

Hi guys,

I have managed to find the death of Winnifred in 1962 and their marriage in 1927. The passenger list for Gilbert in 1927 records that his final destination was to Leslie Woodington's farm, therefore you could essentially put two and two together that Gilbert married the farmer's daughter! It would be good to find out when and where Gilbert died and if there are any of the couple's children and grandchildren out there.

This is odd.. an obit for Winnifred Woodington Caldwell.. says she was Mrs W J Caldwell ??? ??? Perhaps a typo?  The marriage certainly says her husband is Gilbert.

About half of the way down this page... obituary for Eric Caldwell, son of Gilbert and Winnifred Caldwell.  He died earlier this year

http://www.islandregister.com/2017obits.html

A bit longer obituary here
http://www.inmemoriam.ca/view-announcement-609442-eric-caldwell.html

The names of his siblings are the same as the names in Winnifred's obituary.

I wonder if the W J in the obit for Winnifred might be for Winnifred and the initial of a second name?
