Robert Cundall from Leeds Yorkshire
« on: Tuesday 26 September 17 22:27 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
I am trying to identify date and ? army/navy etc of my great grandfather Robert Cundall.
He was born October 1892 and died sep 1946.
Married to Minnie Broadhead in 1914, his father is called William

I found this pic and on the back it says Dad in the last war? ?? which war??
I believe the photograph belonged to his daughter Margaret Ann Cundall.

Thankyou

joanne

So 53 when he died - he does look older in the picture ie not a young man in his 20's/30's - so I would say WW2.

WW1 style uniforms that were in use until the 1930's. Some men have the lanyard on the left shoulder, these moved to the right around the mid 20's, they are Artillerymen. Your man being a driver of horses.
No medal ribbons visible. So may be pre war annual camp or during or post war but before the medals were awarded in 1920.
Is this a UK postcard ?

What has the soldier on the left got hanging from his pocket? Could those stones be for the whitewash?

When the RFA TF were re-numbered in 1917 the new 6 digit numbers were issued in blocks.
The LLT says:
785001 – 790000: 247 Brigade, RFA
785001 – 790000: 312 Brigade, RFA
So the above man was in one of these.
Also from the LLT:
CCXLVII (247) Bde.
Territorial Force 1st Line 49th Division from pre-war, broken up by 28 February 1917. Redesignated.

CCCXII (312) Bde.
Territorial Force 2nd Line 62nd Division from formation in February 1915 until November 1918. Originally designated 2/III West Riding Brigade.
Warks:Ashford;Cadby;Clarke;Clifford;Cooke Copage;Easthope;
