William Strang Harvie, son of William Strang Harvie and Marion Harley, married Euphemia Anderson Lindsay, daughter of John Lindsay and Elizabeth Burt Anderson, in the Masonic Temple, Airdrie on 10 March 1908.
William was killed in action in Flanders on 27 November 1917.
On 20 August 1924 the widowed Effie married Joseph Wilkie Craig, son of William Craig and Marion Wilkie. Joseph was a widower and had three children from his first marriage, born 1910, 1911 and 1914, of whom two died in infancy and the third married in 1939.
Effie died in Coatbridge in 1982 and her death certificate was signed by her son H Craig, of 1 Laird Street, Coatbridge.
Joseph died in Coatbridge in 1956, and his death was registered by H Craig, son, 111 Dunbeth Road, Coatbridge. In his will he mentions his stepson William Strang Harvie Craig, and both William and his brother John Lindsay Harvie Craig continued in the printing business established by their stepfather's father.
William Strang Harvie Craig married in 1942 and died in 2001 in Airdrie, and his date of birth is given as 25 October 1911. His brother John Lindsay Harvey Craig married in 1946 and died in Coatbridge in 2001, and his birth date is given as 26 March 1916.
So it looks clear enough that William and John, named after their respective grandfathers, were born in 1911 and 1916, and adopted by their stepfather.
However, try as I will, I simply cannot find their birth certificates in Scotland, England or Wales, or William's in Ireland. I am not sure if the 1916 Irish births are yet available online, but if they are, John wasn't born in Ireland either. In the military records William's residence is listed as Longriggend and he enlisted in Hamilton.
I have seen all but one* of the certificates relating to this family, but I have failed to find William Harvie and Effie in the 1911 census. Am I going to have to wait until 2022 to see where the 1921 census says they were born, or can anyone else find them in the interim?
*The death certificate of their stepsister Mary Craig or Chassels, who died in 2005 in East Kilbride, which is not going to help find the boys' births.
