Emily J Stedman death
« on: Wednesday 27 September 17 11:30 BST (UK) »
Would some kind soul see if they could find any more details for the death of Emily J Stedman, in 1937?

It is in New York although whether city or state I do not know. Familysearch does not seem to have it.

I am particulary interested in age at death, and the informant, if this is available.

Thanks
Lisa

Emily J. Stedman died in Utica, New York on 10 May 1937. The certificate number is 31317.  No age given, and informants are never listed on this index.

Thank you for this.

Is it possible to obtain a copy of the certificate? Although I imagine that as I am in England, it would be something if a tortuous process

This is the procedure for ordering from the city of Utica.  http://www.cityofutica.com/departments/vital-records/genealogical-services/index

You can also order from the state of New York from the address as explained here - https://www.health.ny.gov/vital_records/genealogy.htm - but I hear they take upwards of 8 months to send it, even without accounting for the overseas issue.

There are some Utica newspapers on www.fultonhistory.com, so those might help you determine if this is the right Emily.

What's interesting on that 1937 death index is that there was Charles D Stedman who died a couple months earlier in what appears to be the same location. "Ute./Utica"???

I only see one Charles D Stedman listed in the NY census records and his wife is an Emily J Stedman....Coincidence?

One thing I've noticed in researching, while the year of birth often may vary the month of birth usually stays consistent.

In the 1900 census Emily's month of birth is November and Charles D's is April.

1900 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MSNZ-1D3

Working back.

This is Charles's  Naturalization record. They got his mddle & last name flip flopped, but the "D" apppears to stand for Delacy.

==========

1891 census Emily's borther is living with them. It appears Emily's maiden name is "
Tankard".

Emily's birth record list her as being born in November.

Even better - Charles and Emily were husband and wife

And yes she was born Emily Tankard, both born in London, England

Thanks to all for your help  :)
