McEttrick's in and from Sligo
« on: Friday 29 September 17 19:43 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm researching my Great, Great Grandfather Thomas McEttrick from the Sligo area in Ireland. He had several brothers and I'm not sure if they all emigrated to the states or not. My great aunt Peg (Margeret Celdnor) would visit the Sligo area in the 1960-70's and bring supplies like coats and clothing to family members.

Are there any living McEttrick's around the Sligo area today? I can't find any info on his brothers and sisters. Easky, Co. Sligo, St James Catholic Church comes up in an old memory....
Thanks for any help!!

McGettrick evidentially was the sur name....the G was left off somewhere down the line in immigration.

Thanks Maggsie,
I am not sure about this. The one record I have is a census report from the US that shows on that form that he was born May of 1866 and immigrated in 1882 to New York. This could be wrong information, like my grandmother who had her birthdate messed up on each different form through time.

What I know: He married Elizabeth Mary in 1891 and had 6 children in NY.  Sue, Mary, Margaret, Jane, John Gregory, and my grandfather Francis Benjamin.

My great aunt Margaret (Peg Celdnor per marriage) used to visit Sligo and bring jackets, blankets, etc to less fortunate family on multiple occasions.

Not sure when the G was left off of the name, making it into McEttrick. I believe he had 3 brothers that went to the states, and possibly he was the only one they changed the last name on.

THANKS FOR THE HELP!!

All the Best!
Michael

Well you obviously know names of brothers whatever they were!

As you can see Ballymote is one place where the name was found on Census.... have you looked at those Registers to see if you can find a family that has same names??

A simple s/sheet with Date, Name, Father's Christian name and Townland might help sort them if you cannot find these unnamed brothers in Easkey Registers.

Plenty of McGettricks there... http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632304#page/1/mode/1up

Obviously, hahaha! Actually I am completely stumped with the names of the brothers....anyone that knew is dead on this side of the pond unfortunately. Thanks for the link to the McGettricks!

Any McEttricks/McGettricks involved with St. Joseph's Parish and or with relatives in the Columbus, OHIO area? All the best!
