Harriet Ann Cox, Clap Gate, Blockhouse
« on: Saturday 30 September 17 17:36 BST (UK) »
Hello!
Bit of a mystery here:
On my G.G.G. Grandfather's death certificate (Henry Dowler)it states that his death was registered on the 24th November 1860. Apparently he died in Clap Gate, Blockhouse and his death was registered by an "X" belonging to somebody called Harriet Ann Cox that was "present at death".
I have no idea who this person is being as my relative clearly didn't die at home with his wife. Neither can I find a "Harriet Ann" anyone in any record collection...

Any ideas appreciated!
Emma😊

I don't think it was part of the workhouse, from what I can gather Blockhouse was some "added on" bit of Worcester that used to be a load of fields?
Certainly NOT where my G.G.G. Grandmother lived!
He had a fever for 11 weeks according to the list of "causes of death"...would there have been a hospital in Blockhouse does anyone know - maybe this elusive Harriet person was a nurse??? Can't find her anywhere as far as census/BMD records go however.🤔

Workhouses used to be hospitals before the NHS

I will investigate whether there was a workhouse in Blockhouse...thank you very much for the tip! 😊
It would explain why he wasn't at home and why a random person was with him at death if he was admitted. 👍

I think Blockhouse was an area of Worcester and Clap Gate was a street.

A-ha! According to the link you sent there was an addition to the workhouse there from 1858...2 years before he died. Thank you very much for your help! 😊😊😊

Well Solid Rock, My G.G.G. Grandfather was at this Clap Gate for some time being as he had a "fever for 11 weeks". If there was no workhouse on that street I am beginning to ponder whether he was having some form of dodgy "extramarital" relationship with this Harriet person...🤔😱
