Is there anywhere i can search the Birmingham Parish Register Births for free online? I can not go any further back using the GRO and am not sure where to look now? Why does the GRO not go further back than 1837?

Why does the GRO not go further back than 1837?
Because registration of births, marriages and deaths only started in 1837.

Ancestry have on-line records for Birmingham. If you don't have a subscription, then, if you live in England, you could see whether your library has access. Very many libraries now have access to Ancestry and/or FindMyPast.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids. They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Have you tried Familysearch? It's a Mormon website and free to search.
They have quite a lot of Birmingham records but not the original scans.
