Janet Clingan

I have been trying to find a birth for Janet Clingan born between 1823 and 1829 (ages on census) at Kirkpatrick Durham. Her death was in 1908 aged 79, her father was John Clingan and mother Janet Ferguson but can't find a marriage for them either. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Keyboard 86,
Thanks for your reply but 1851 census Janet (now Janey McTaggart) is married to William McTaggart but staying with grandmother Isabella Ferguson, Main Street, Kirkpatrick Durham. Janet's first child Mary Affleck McTaggart was born 18/5/1851 at Kirkpatrick Durham, I expect that is why she was staying there at the time. She then returns to Rerrick area where the child was baptised and her husband worked.

Unfortunately, it is all a bit hit and miss pre 1855 and the start of official Scottish registrations. Only a about a third of events are to be found today in the Old Parish Registers - OPRs (established Church of Scotland, ie Presbyterian records). Many registers have been lost or destroyed over the years. Also, not everyone registered BMD events (it cost money to so). Families may not have belonged to the established Church of Scotland and, in the main, these are the records you will find on Scotlands People and Family Search. SP have a separate online database for Roman Catholic records on their site.
