Angmering birth
« on: Saturday 07 October 17 13:27 BST (UK) »
I have the 1941 census informing me that James Goddard was 35yrs old ,so born 1805. Is there any chance any member can inform me maybe from parish records if he was born Angmering and if possible the names of his parents. Regards Eirwen.

His age could have been rounded down to the nearest 5 years in 1841.
A baptism in Angmering, 26 June 1803

Hi
Well, the baptism is indexed - along with a John in 1807 to same parents - on FamilySearch
You can still see the parish register images on the same site, Peter Calvert tells you how to do it here
https://www.lostcousins.com/newsletters2/feb16news.htm#SussexPR

But FamilySearch doesn't have records for all Sussex parishes and I can't see a likely marriage for Thomas and Sarah indexed?
John

I fear we may be going off on a tangent.

Is this the 1841 census that you had?

1841
Toll House, Old Shoreham
JAmes Goddard 35 ag lab Y
Ann 30 Y
Charles 8 Y
Ann 6 Y
Sarah 4 Y
Fanny 2 Y

if so, this looks like him in 1851:

1851
Old Shoreham
Joseph 50  bn Houghton
Ann 42 bn Fittleworth
Charles 18
Ann 16
Sarah 14
Fanny 11
Jane 9
George 7
Maria 4
Charlotte 2
Mary 2 mths

No mention of Angmering.

If this isn't the family you are following, then can you give us the details from 1841?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

James Goddard and his family can be found in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses for Angmering; the latter two agree in placing his birth in Angmering (1841, of course, is silent on precise birthplace). His is missing from the 1871 Angmering census where his wife Sarah can be found as a widow. James Goddard, aged 60, was buried at Angmering on 21 August 1862 (source: PRTS).

I think jonw65 has the right baptism, in which case a burial on 6 Mar 1827 at Angmering of Sarah Goddard, aged 50, may be that of James's mother. On 31 May 1827 Thomas Goddard, aged "about 50", was buried there. James's father maybe? (Source: PRTS)

I can't find the marriage of James's parents in my source for Angmering marriages, but James married Sarah Dyer there on 22 December 1827 after banns. Both parties were single and the witnesses were Thomas Andrews and Elizabeth Bowley.

Transcriptions of Angmering (and other) censuses, together with Angmering parish records, are here: http://www.familytreedesigns.co.uk/angmering.htm
