It's not Barlings.
Check the other census(es) for your man first.

Not sure if it's a Parish, but certainly the name of a manor, see this reference in a book "The History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent"  from 1798

Oh, ok, Egerton is not really close to Gravesend? But Barming looks much more likely  ;) based on other info off familysearch

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

For all other(s)  searching. Alternatives to "Barlings" are not needed.

The birthplace is explicit on 1871 census transcription , the 1839 marriage takes place there and the man's baptism there is all on Familysearch.

Just for clarification - 1861 census image shows that Walter Warterhouse was born in Barming, Kent.

1871 - Walter Waterhouse - born Barming, Kent.

Hi Bumblebee

Can I just clarify your kind answer, you have William marrying Mary Ann Newman. Also there appears to be a discrepancy between baptism 1818 and age i8hn 1839 of 28, maybe it was a late baptim or incorrect entry on marriage ent :Dry.

Many thanks

David
