Children of James Duncan & Agnes Crookston
« on: Monday 09 October 17 03:26 BST (UK) »
My main interest is son John Duncan born 22 Oct 1809, but research I have seen of James Duncan born 4 Nov 1773 in Newbattle & his wife Agnes Crookston born 10 July 1774 in Gladsmuir (no marriage located) has the following older siblings of John, being James born abt 1799 Pencaitland, Christian born abt 1801 Pencaitland, Grizel born abt 1803 Pencaitland. These have no baptismal records. John's other two sister's & himself have baptism records. Those are Catharine Duncan born 7 Nov 1805 Gladsmuir, she married Andrew McLaren 9 Oct 1803 Pencaitland & she died 15 Jan 1883 Hunterfield, Cockpen, Midlothian & Helen Duncan born 4 Dec 1807 Cranston, Midlothian, she married James King 29 May 1829 Newton Village, Midlothian. She died 14 April 1871 West Calder. John Duncan married Jean Mclaren, 23 Feb 1833 Pencaitland. She was older sister of Andrew McLaren already mentioned. Jean died 17 Aug 1855 in Arniston Engine, Cockpen. John then remarried Ann Young a few months later 31 Dec 1855. John died 16 June 1869 Royal Edinburgh Asylum from emphysema & bronchitis, common for miners. Are there any Duncan researchers who know about James, Christian & Grizel Duncan. The whys & hows of them being recorded. How are their collaborated. I know it is suggested that James Snr Father was James Duncan who married (can't be located) Christian Ferguson. Would be appreciated.

I wonder if they are kin to my great-great-great grandfather Alexander Duncan/Julia Nimmo of Linlithgow, married in 1806? Or great-great grandfather George Duncan (born in 1820), master butcher of Dumbarton married to Mary McLaren of Glasgow?

I realise that you are asking about the Duncan side.  But I wanted to make sure that you are aware of the Crookston information.  If not, you may be interested in the thread titled "Joan (Jackie) Crookston of the Tranent Massacre" (last updated on 18 February 2013).  In particular, my post of 14 March 2010 lists Agnes Crookston and her husband James Duncan.

Haven't been here for some time. Thanks David, I know some little of Jackie Crookston, so will take a look. Cheers Lindsay.
