John Durrance of Burton Lazars
« on: Tuesday 10 October 17 05:46 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I've found my 6 x great grandparents, John Durrance and Ann Chambers who married 9 Aug 1790 at Melton Mowbray. The parish records (I have a transcript) say they were both of Burton Lazars and the majority of their children were baptised at Burton Lazars. I am hoping to get some help with John's baptism. I can't find it in Melton Mowbray and the Burton Lazars transcript I have starts too late for John's baptism. Another site that I belong to has many users who claim John's birth or baptism to be 8 Oct 1769 at Burton Lazars but I can't find it. Any ideas where to look next would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!!

Burton Lazars - 8 October 1769 - image on FindMyPast
John son of James Durrands by Elisabeth his wife

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Not sure whether this is the same John or a cousin perhaps, but there is an entry in the bastardy records for Easter 1791 for John Durrance of Burton Lazars.  The mother was Ann Felstead, single woman of Hoby, female delivered.

The bastardy order was also recorded in the 1791 Epiphany quarter sessions & the bondsman was John Cooper of Rearsby.  A date of 20 Nov 1790 is given, although I'm not entirely clear what this relates to.

JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

Thanks for your help everyone. I'm pretty certain my John is the son of James and Elizabeth. They had several other children baptised in Burton Lazars. Whether he is also the subject of the bastardy order I don't know yet. He and Ann Chambers were married 9 August 1790. I haven't discovered any other John Durrances of the appropriate age but it's early days so will  keep an open mind.
Thanks again!!
