Narva, ESTONIA - looking for surname TERK b. 1909
« on: Tuesday 10 October 17 20:16 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Anyone of you fellow 'Rootchatters' have knowledge and know your way around the vital records for Estonia? As I could sure use a hand up ;D

I am looking for a baptism or marriage record for Sinaida/Zinaida TERK b. 20 May 1909 in I thought Tallinn, Estonia but now, with the help of others, it seems she could have been born in Narva, Estonia.

Sinaida's father was I believe Johannes TERK. But I'd like to confirm this and find her mother's name too.

Sinaida married Boris Aleksejev before March 1928 when they moved from Narva, as a married couple, to Tallinn.

I have no marriage for them and know nothing of Boris' family (father quite possibly named Aleksander Aleksejev).  Sinaida & Boris may have actually married in Narva?

They had a son born in September 1928 presumably he was born in Tallinn.

Presumably Boris died before 1942 though as Sinaida married in 1942 to Helmut Sumberg.

The family moved from Tallinn to Sweden in 1945 then onto Canada in the early 1950's.

Anybody up for the challenge :)
I would appreciate the help

Thanks all

Hi LUV
I am unable to help you in Estonia but I can in Sweden.
You may have these already but I took a look in the Swedish 1950 Census and found:

Helmut Sumberg - born Estonia 1910-01-09
married 15 Sept 1942
Sinaida Aleksejeva Sumberg nee Terk - Estonia born 1909-05-20

and

Anatoli Aleksejev - born Estonia 28 Sept 1928

There are a number of Terks and one other Aleksejev in the 1950 Census.

Yes, it was that document that helped cinch the surname and second marriage.

Thank you though for the help. ;D

Where/when did Sinaida pass away? I can see Helmut's death in Vancouver, 1961:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FLT9-6QZ

I think this might be a reference to their marriage, hard to read (it's actually at the top right of page 12, they are the last couple listed in the paragraph about marriages)

A few probably related entries from Tallinn address
(last name, first name, patronymic)
Tőrk, Johannes, Kustas
 - born 21 / VIII / 1876
residence: "IV"
street: Kodu
house: 8
krt(?): 1
Estonian, Lutheran.

Tőrk, Ekaterina, Jakob
 - born 13, VII, 1884
 - address details the same
 - religion "Russian" - Russian Orthodox?

Aleksejewa, Sinaida, Johannes
 - born 20 Jan 1909
 - same address as the above two people
 - arrived in March from Narva
 - possibly Orthodox?

Terk, Sinaida, Johannes
 - same birthdate, but gives address in Narva

Aleksejev, Boris, Aleksander
 - born 14 Nov 1906
 - Russian, stateless
 - "Russian"

I would guess that Johannes and Ekaterina are likely to be parents of Sinaida...

Hi jorose

A huge, huge thank you.
Sinaida also passed away in Vancouver, it was in 2000 - she was 90. I have her obit from the newspaper but it gave very little info ... the family knew very little of her life in Estonia as a child and young woman as her only son married & divorced so family history became sketchy (need I say more!).

It has been working backwards to Estonia and beyond that has been the stumbling block.
I had the document you just sent for Sinaida, husband Boris and their son Anatol.  But I did not have the ones for presumably her parents  ;D  as they are at the same address so yes I would think it is her parents - thank you.

It seems Sinaida is represented twice in the source?
Aleksejewa, Sinaida, Johannes
 - born 20 Jan 1909
 - same address as the above two people
 - arrived in March from Narva
 - possibly Orthodox?

Terk, Sinaida, Johannes
 - same birthdate, but gives address in Narva

So what exactly is this source?  An address book for Tallinn & area or something similar?  The year is what for the source?

Maybe she went to Narva for work?  Meant and married Boris circa 1928 and then they came back to Tallinn when she was going to have her son - he was born Sept 1928???

Interesting TERK aka Tőrk - I do not know Estonian or Russian but assume it is just another way to spell it?

Again thank you as you have given me one more generation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They seem to be documents created by the city government to track who was living where.
The dates stamped on these suggest they were created (or updated?) mostly in 1926-1928.

It's interesting that Johannes appears to be Lutheran and the rest of the family Russian/ Russian Orthodox.

http://www.ra.ee/dgs/addon/nimreg/
 - if you search here for Terk in Tallinn I think there's more.
Difficult to link the image directly I think, but look for TLA.1463.1.11
This is an index to Lutheran records.
It references a Johannes Terk, father Kustas, birth 8 August 1876 as given on the later records but it also specifies location of birth (Allafer, seems to be a small village).
It would appear he married twice - once 1898, to a Katrina, who appears to have died in 1905. A daughter Elwina is listed to her, born 1900.
A second marriage is referenced in 1906, to Ekatherina Jakob Leinasaar.

Thank you again for yet another find jorose!

I tried to go to the document but I needed to create an account with the Archives first.  I attempted to do that but it would not except my attempts.  I will wait and try again tomorrow as perhaps it is internet related.

With this Lutheran document it would seem though that Sinaida's mother's maiden name is presumably "Leinasaar"... is Jakob her father or her middle name?

Sinaida's obit  in 2000 did indicate that the service would be held at the "Estonian Evangelical LUTHERAN" church.  So yes, I guess Lutheran was perhaps her religion and her family.  Whereas Boris and their son was Russian Orthodox.

Interesting that Boris was "Russian stateless"...what exactly did that mean during the 1920's?

Thank you
LUV

 Hi jorose
I got my account and into the Estonian Archive  :o

While I am still learning to navigate (thanks to google translate)  I found a document I believe for Johannes Terk with his parents in Alavere.
However I cannot read the document too well and am hoping you or someone can take a look at the document?  The titles for the categories are in  German. It is the handwriting I cannot make out.

I can read that it is Kustas Terk (Johannes father) but not his wife's name? and I see Johannes mentioned and the birth year of 1876 so I think it is them.  Also another sibling...

I think it is some sort of tithe record?

It gives the birthdates and then I think years confirmed into the Lutheran Church?

Personal book. Alavere, Pikva, Ojasoo, ...; EAA.1215.1.113; 1885-1907
(Personaalraamat. Alavere, Pikva, Ojasoo, ...; EAA.1215.1.113; 1885-1907)

Anybody able to make out the info on Kusta?
