Daddy or Paddy
« on: Sunday 15 October 17 23:52 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have an old army photograph and on it, someone in the past has written the word Paddy or Daddy underneath one of the soldiers - we currently have no photographs of John Doran as a man, (my great granddad), although we do know that they have existed at some point - the confusion lies with the fact that both John and his brother Patrick, aka, Paddy were both in the army and so we are unsure as to whether it reads Daddy or Paddy - I personally, although I would love it to come back as Daddy, think it reads more like Paddy!  What do you think?  Look forward to hearing from you. Only other bit of info that could assist is Paddy was a sapper in the army while John made it to sergeant in the 6th Battalion Inniskilling Fusiliers?

Probably Paddy as the double Ds are a consistent shape that doesn't match the first letter

I think it is Paddy too.      ;)

Do you know if Paddy played the bugle?   That might help clinch the matter.

That's what I thought too - the D's are the same shape and different from the first letter - slightly!  Yes he could play the bugle as well as the flute....and from his army records, the devil himself!  ;D Thanks for replying  :)

Good evening,

I would go with Paddy as well. It is certainly not the Inniskillings Fusiliers, wrong cap badge by a long way.

However i'm not sure about the Royal Engineers either. I can find no evidence of them wearing glengarries at any time. Will keep searching though just to see what I can find.

PS, it may be worthwhile getting the thread moved to the armed forces board ww1.

Thanks everyone for your replies - John was definitely in the Inniskilling Fusiliers so if this is nothing like the uniform then it is definitely not Daddy!  Saying that, I know that both Paddy and John's Dad was also in the army so I'm now wondering when the heck this photo was taken and by who - I will post on the relevant page with regards to that lol - Thanks again everyone  :)
