Derryvullen 1821 census placename
« on: Tuesday 17 October 17 12:02 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am having trouble identifying the townland in an entry for James Magrigor on the 1821 census of the parish of Derryvullan.  It looks like Derew on the image (attached).  The tithe records show a Dorroo which could be the same place but it doesn't get me any closer to working out what the actual name of the place is.
I've tried looking at lists of townlands in Fermanagh but I can't come up with anything close to these two names.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it could be?
Many thanks

Thanks for the suggestion myluck but Duross is listed separately in the census under its own name.

Would it be one of the islands Inish Divann or Inish Davar? They are technically in Lurg

Marked the ones I think are matches in Red, I think the two in blue are also a match.
Some of the others must be matches or perhaps some may be in one of the surrounding Civil Parishes. Some may have been taken in by a neighbouring townland.

Thanks Siann, that was an interesting exercise.  It shows how many places in the 1821 census are not to be found in the second list.

I think I have now found where Derew is.  As I said earlier there is a Dorroo in the tithe records which I think is another way of spelling Derew.  Some of the same people listed in the 1821 census are also at Dorroo in the tithe records.  This was found at https://www.northernirelandgenweb.org/fermanagh/titheapplotment/tithe_derryvullen_town.html

However a search of Dorroo on https://www.townlands.ie/fermanagh/ does not bring up any matches.  But looking at the above website for the parish of Drumkeeran brings up the name DOORAA (north and south).  This I'm pretty sure is the place I'm looking for.  It borders Feddans where the McGregor family lived from the late 1820s.

I know Dooraa is a long way from the parish of Derryvullan and I can't explain why it is said to be there in the 1821 census but I really feel that Dooraa is Derew.

I'd be interested in the comments of anyone who has an opinion on the above.

Many thanks to all who replied.

I think at least two from 1821 list are in the neighbouring Civil Parish of Magheraculmoney, possibly more! Needs more study.
