Florence Bates (M/S Aubrey)
« on: Sunday 22 October 17 11:14 BST (UK) »
Hey,

This is a bit of a cheeky request but can anyone help with some assistance filling in the blanks with regards to my great-grandmother, please?

Like my other users, my knowledge of great-grandparents is limited at best so making sense of the various records is proving a challenge (albeit an addictive one).  Figured that its best to start with the person who is closed to my grandmother and that would be her mother born Florence A Aubrey (26/08/1893) to John & Alice in Birmingham (record shows Solihull).  I then know that she got married to Edwin Samuel Bates and then died in 1950 but all in the Birmingham area.

Found her on the 1950 electoral role as living with my grandmother in Cowley Road Birmingham which I know to be correct as this is the same year she died outside the front door suddenly (harsh!!).

I also know she has kids including my grandmother Jean along with Leslie & Harold.

Looking at what I have typed, you could argue that I know quite a bit about her but the truth be told I don't feel that way.  Sure, I have to take into account records 70 plus years ago were not as common as they now but I still feel that I am missing additional information purely due to not knowing where or what to look for.

Any help to piece together this puzzle would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Scott

Hello Scott and welcome to rootschat from me too!

I'm not quite sure what additional information you would like about your g grandmother. From the GRO website, her birth (as you say) was registered in Solihull: Florence Annie AUBREY Sept Qtr 1893 (06D/581). Her mother's maiden name was REES.

I wonder if Edwin Samuel died young - there is a death in Birmingham 1933 for an Edwin S Bates age 37.

I want to know as much as I can - I dont know what I dont know if that makes sense ? is there a common place to look for schooling, do any records of any possible evacuation or resettlement during WW1 etc exist.  Things like that really.

Hmm - that would make sense as to why Florence was living with her Daughter during the last years of her life.
