Frederick is on the 1901 Census.

FindMyPast search criteria:-  Given Name - Frederick (with alternatives), Surname - Davies (no alternatives); Destination - United States; Year - 1901 - 1906

Frederick Davies, date 19/4/1905, draughtsman, ship - Teutonic
F W Davies, date 30/4/1904, mechanic, single, ship - Umbria
F W Davies, date 16/9/1904, ship - Umbria

https://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/passenger

I checked arrivals and eliminated Frederick Davies, draughtsman, Teutonic - born 1870.

The arrival of the Umbria not recorded.

Found a likely match for Frederick in 1910 US census as suggested

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9RK5-9D41?i=30&cc=1727033

Fred (also named as Fred in his father's obituary) W Davies, born 1874 (correct), Wales. Arrived 1904. Listed as Grocery Merchant. In 1891 and 1901 uk census he was a grocer's assistant. He is living in WestMoreland, in Pennsylvania and in his father's 1906 obituary states he was living in Scranton, which is in Pennsylvania.

I wonder if this might be your Frederick, as he is around the right age and born in Mountain Ash, according to the 2nd page of the passenger list.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J6QR-83X  It says he had been in the US from 1905-1918.  He was going to Montana, which is not terribly close to Scranton, Pennsylvania, but maybe he moved.

Given the time frame, he may have gone home to serve in WWI.  Possible service record has a guy with the right name & age born in Mountain Ash-

Thank you very much for this, I will investigate further. However, there is a conflict here in that if it says he was in the US from 1905-1918, how could he have then been serving in in the British army in 1917. Having said that, I can't see another Frederick William Davies of the right age born Mountain Ash in 1911 or earlier censuses.

The time he was in the US would have been by his own report, so it's not unusual to see those dates were slightly off.

The Frederick William Davies who arrived on this 1919 ship filed a declaration of intention to become naturalized in Alameda Co., California on 9 May 1919 and said he was born 11 Dec. 1873 in Mountain Ash, South Wales.  His address at that time was 2468 Hearst St., Oakland, California.  He filed a petition for naturalization in the US District Court of Colorado at Denver on 4 May 1926.  He was a salesman living at 1660 Ogden St., Denver.  He was naturalized in Nov. 1927.

Thank you very much. This must be him. His birth was registered in the Mar Qtr 1874, Pontypridd,  birth registration in this quarter would be entirely plausible if he was born mid December 1873. I will look to getting his birth certificate to confirm

Could be.  There is also a marriage record for an F.W. Davies of the right age in 1930.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-8B24-3Y5?i=994&cc=1932434

This looks like it may be him, divorced in the 1940 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VRD5-HXY

A possibility for him in the 1920 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MX2J-MGJ

And possible burial - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVGC-Y8B7
