Lambeth Workhouse/Infirmary patient records
« on: Sunday 22 October 17 13:34 BST (UK) »
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post being my first question but here it is...

Hoping to get some advice on searching admission and discharge records for the Lambeth Workhouse/Infirmary.
My great grandmother was a patient there on the 1911 census. I know she was discharged not long later as she got pregnant and had my great great uncle in 1912. Sadly she died within a couple of months of the birth, her death certificate tells me she was back in the infirmary. So there should be at last 2 admission records and 1 or 2 discharge records.
I've found the Lambeth records search on Ancestry but unfortunately the it comes up blank for her. I know she was in there at least twice so how is this so? My next thought is I need to look through the records one by one but that seems ludicrous  (one of the records alone has over 900 pages!). Anyone got any advice for me? Thanking you in advance :)
PS: I live in Australia so it will have to be something I can do online :)

Welcome to RootsChat
I think the records on Ancestry are the Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records, not the infirmary.

Oh right. That would explain why she doesn't come up in any search I try. Any idea where I can find the patient records for 1911 & 1912 without physically going to the archives as I'm in Australia?

There is mention of Lambeth Hospital (as it came to be known) on the National Archives site - but it says that all records are with London Metropolitan Archives.
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/4a5e1172-d9b7-4231-9108-3d0abc01d177

London Metrpolitan Archives says:
Over 80 hospitals, many now closed, have deposited their records in London Metropolitan Archives (LMA). The extent of our holdings for each hospital ranges from one volume or document to hundreds of feet of archives.

Some hospital records have not yet been catalogued and can only be made available for consultation by prior appointment at least a week in advance.

Access to Patients Records
Hospital records are subject to a period of restricted access in order to protect the confidentiality of living individuals. It may therefore not be possible for you to consult all the records yourself. We are able to undertake research on behalf of an individual to provide information from hospital records but we do have to ensure that the information is only being released to either the individual concerned or in the case of a third party request that the patient concerned is deceased. We do charge for undertaking such searches within our records.
We suggest that in the first instance you contact the enquiry team who will be able to advise you on how to proceed with your particular enquiry.

Oh yes please! That would be amazing! I'm in Australia so obviously can't go myself. Thank you so much.

What info do you need?

This is what I know...
Her name was Eliza Lilian Brown (married name was Beechey but I don't believe they were actually married But on the 1911 census she was in the infirmary and used Beechey).
Her DOB was 18 Oct 1882
I know she was there in 1911 because that's where she was on the census, listed as a patient. I'm not sure when she went in though.
I know she was back there in 1912 as that's where she died as listed on her death certificate (she died 7 April 1912). She did leave though as she got pregnant and had her last son in Feb 1912.
What other info do you need? I can also send you any docs if you need.
Thank you!

Hi

What other info do you need?

That looks fine, thanks

More as a reminder for me

There are

Creed Registers
Indexes to Admission/Discharge Registers

which should pinpoint actual  dates

Then there are

the Admission/Discharge registers themselves

Also

Burial Register
Death Register

Also possible

Patient Case files

Ruled out

Baptism/birth registers start at 1914 so too late

If anyone wants to suggest anything else, please go ahead
