Missing in 1861 -emigrated to US?
« on: Tuesday 24 October 17 08:59 BST (UK) »
1851 at Ramsey (Holme) (Hunts/Cambs/Northants) has Robert Stokes 28 ,wife Mary Ann 28, Sarah Ann 8, Rhoda 7, Zacheaus 5, Martha 4, Betsey Wesley Stokes . No mention in 1861 or later. Did they emigrate? There is a Zacheus (sic) Stokes in Minnesota State Prison (emigrated 1870)  in 1900 and a ZS Stokes in Gordon Todd Minnesota (born England 1846) in 1885. Did the whole family emigrate after 1856 when Robert inherited much land from his father John Stokes (will 1856) Holme.

There are a couple of public trees on Ancestry which record the family in the US, with sources.

Newspaper reports (the St Paul Globe) in January and May 1897 record Zach Stokes' arrest and conviction for incest with his 17 year old daughter. Sentenced to 7 Years imprisonment. 55 years old, born in England, a  prominent farmer and longtime resident.
