Finding streets and roads that are now gone

Can anyone offer any good hints and tips on finding now-disappeared streets and roads? A large chunk of my father's paternal family hail from the Greenwich and Deptford areas of London, which have changed dramatically over the last 200 years.

Often, a bit of internet research turns up the required information, but sometimes I'm getting a little stumped.

Specifically, I'm trying to find out where Little Thames Street was - I know it was SOMEWHERE around the Borthwick Street/Watergate Street area, right by the river, (1881 and 1891 census returns) but I haven't been able to get any further than that.

Any advice on good search resources would be greatly appreciated - and any information on this specific query would be wonderful.

(And if I'm posting this in the wrong part of the forum, please let me know - I'm having a little difficulty navigating my way around the different areas!)

The Old Deptford History website http://www.olddeptfordhistory.com/2012/05/lost-village-center-of-deptford.html states:
"Butcher Row (now Borthwick Street) led to Lower Watergate, Middle Watergate (known as Great Thames Street), and Upper Watergate. Straddling Lower and Middle Watergate was Little Thames Street AKA Lower Road."

The Inner London Street Name Changes site http://www.rayment.info/general/road_name_changes/14_2L_Inner_London_Streets_Old_Names.html states that Little Thames Street SE10 is now Clavell Street.

Depending on dates, using the census can be useful to determine exact whereabouts of streets.

Check the neighbours in the census, and/or check the enumerator's route which often includes streets which still exist today which will give you a rough idea of location. 

There are lots of old maps online which can be useful once you have narrowed down the location of the street.

There are also a couple of sites which give old to new street names which can be useful depending on the dates.

The NLS maps have a 'side by side' and 'overlay' feature which is excellent to compare 'then and now' locations especially when substantial changes have been made over the years as they have in the Greater London area.

If there are specific streets you need help with, you can always ask for help locating them.
