Looking for info on Armstrongs from Longford Ireland
« on: Thursday 26 October 17 15:08 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am trying to trace my Roots back to Ireland, possibly even Scotland.

My 4th Great Gandfather was a Man named John Henry Armstrong, b. Circa 1790.
He marrried Catherine Amelia Forbes 9 March 1819 in TempleMichael Parish (I have that record but no Parents names for either.

John Henry was a Shoemaker and was a Settler that left Ireland on a Ship called the East Indian sailing from Co. Cork.

It is believed (might be no relation) he had two brothers, James and Laurance b. Circa 1793, both I believe were farmers and were the same age leading me to believe they were twins.

I have all the info I need on Johne Henry since landing in the Cape as a Settler all the way down to my Grandfather, Norman George Armstrong, its the families past that eludes us. Any assistance or "shoves in the right direction" will be most greatly appreciated.

Side Note: John Henry Armstrong was receiving a military pension, he was a Private in the 6th Battalion of the 60th Regiment of Foot

Regards,
Craig

Apologies, he married her 1819 not 1919, he died at the age of 45 on the 20.4.1835 Near Kei River in the Cape, South Africa

I have taken a screen shot of the Roots Ireland record of his and Amelia Forbes marriage on the 9th March 1819 but there is no denomination listed, the Rev was:

REV CH MINCHIN (Not sure if the reverend stuck to their specific denominations or if they crossed denominations)

Thanks for the Parish records link, I will have a look through both and see if I get any leads.

1824 Longford directory- MINCHIN Rev. C. H. Artilery-barrack
http://www.igp-web.com/Longford/1824_directory.htm

A marriage record from 1819 is unlikely to list much more detail other than date, name of bride and groom and possibly witnesses.

If you google "Rev Minchin & Longford" lots of references come up.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
