Did Michael and Sarah Madigan go to Australia?
« on: Thursday 26 October 17 15:51 BST (UK) »
Hi

It's a while since I have researched any ancestors in Australia, and I have forgotten all the best websites to use but I have the following problem I need some help with.

I have been researching my great x3 great aunt Sarah Baldwin.

In 1843 she married Michael Madigan in St Giles in Middlesex.  The couple had 5 children, that I have found, 4 of whom all died very young, leaving one, Mary born 1846.

I have found them on the 1851 census in St Giles and then apart from babies being born and then buried, nothing after 1854.

Despite searching and searching I cannot find deaths or census records for them.

According to a number of trees on Ancestry, Mary emigrated to Australia but not sure when.  She apparently married Francis Robert Fowler in Queensland in 1872.

If they emigrated before the 1861 census which I cannot find them on in England, Mary would have been very young to have gone unaccompanied and I am just wondering if her parents went too.

Is anyone able to find them or point me in the right direction to see if I can find them??

Thank you

Kerryb  :)

Thank you cup of life.  That proves that then, Mary’s parents are exactly right.  Excellent.  Presumably the son born 1872 could be before they married hence the middle name.  Also Hester or sometimes Esther is the name of Sarah’s mother.

Off to check out the links.

May be of interest http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/AUS-QLD/2007-09/1189407939
...."For those looking for ancestors who came in the 1860's, a touch of news..from the State archive site http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/index/immigration.asp
The records for the 1860s are incomplete because they were inundated in the 1893 floods. The registers held at Queensland State Archives were rewritten from the damaged originals.
So it is possible that our ancestors did come in the 1860's but were recorded in the damaged 1860's records. This is frustrating as that is when my MADDIGAN's may have come over."

It looks like Michael and Sarah went back to Ireland.  Michael son of Michael MADIGAN and Sarah BALDWIN was baptised 30 Nov 1855 at St Mary's, Dublin.

Mary's son was the informant when she died in 1918 and he said that she had been in Queensland for 50 years, though he may have just worked that out from when the first child was born.

Oh wow, thank you Debra, that I hadn’t foreseen! But explains why nothing can be found in uk or Australia and they had another child.  :)
