Assistance required for Mary Pointer (married surname)
« on: Monday 30 October 17 14:20 GMT (UK) »
I have hit a brick wall that I don't know if I can solve.  My 4 x great grandmother is Mary Pointer born 1799 (that is an estimate based on census records).  Pointer is her married surname not her maiden surname.  She was married to John Pointer who was born in approximately 1785 and died in 1859.  They has three children - James, Benjamin and Thomas.  They lived in and around Devon.

I am desperately trying to find out what Mary's maiden surname would've been, I just don't know if these records exist electronically.

Any guidance is welcome.
Howard - Romiley, Cheshire
Kane - Scotland and Ireland
Pointer - England
Henry - Ireland
Stock - Holland and South Africa
Bagshaw - Cheshire
Weideman - South Africa
Cameron - Scotland

OK don't think it's her.
In 1851 there are 4 children: Thomas 20; Elizabeth 11; Emma 9 & James 4 is this them?

I see John is with his Son James born c 1824 Cornwood on 1851 Census.

Could this be John/Mary in 1841 Census?

1841 Census

Mary Domter, 40
Mary Domter, 14
Jeanette Domter, 9

Marriage;
Familysearch.Org
10 July 1818, East Stonehouse, Devon, England
John POINTER to Mary Ann SHEPHERD

I was just a bit confused there for a while as to why John was with his Son and not Mary aand Family in 1851.
But he is down as Mar, so looks like the right one and may have just been staying overnight with James.

Trish :)

Reg. Dist. is Plymton St. Mary. I can see an Emma registered there in 1843 mmn Shepheard which is what you have but not seeing any of the other children with same mmn.
The census looks right to me but still need the OP to confirm this is the right family.

I think it's same family. Image looks like Pointer'

Although James is recorded as son, she seems a bit old to have a 4 year old.

Another son George bapt 1821 died 1840. Benjamin died 1846.
All children's baptisms on FindMyPast except James - the one age 4 in 1851. But John and Mary had a son James bapt in 1823 and he married in 1848 to Elizabeth Toms who was a  spinster but her father is George Kersewell. A Jane Pointer was one of the witnesses.
