Scotland 1911 Census
« on: Thursday 02 November 17 00:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I cannot find an answer to this, why is that I can see the England/Wales 1911 Census records online through a site like Ancestry, but not in my local Historical Library who can give me access to Scottish census records between 1841-1901 for Inverclyde (Gourock, Greenock and Port Glasgow plus some other areas)
It seem that only Scotlandspeople have access to this and you pay a fortune to access the records. Why not have them freely available through a subscription like in Ancestry or Findmypast.

Scotlands People has never been an annual subscription site.  You will have to direct your question to them to get an answer as to the reason.  A great many of their other records are not available on the subscription sites

I didn't know anyone could access any census records for anywhere in Scotland through the Library or do you mean transcriptions?

"It seem that only Scotlandspeople have access to this"

I think you mean 'we' only have access through SP?

Your quite right transcriptions, however you may of known what I meant. I do know that Scotlandspeople is not and never has had an annual subscription service. What I was meaning, why do you have to pay over the odds to pay for info that should be included on subscription sites like Ancestry as they include 1911 England And Wales. I feel that the Scottish Govt is holding out and getting more like the Irish where records are few and far between to get included with mainstream sites. And why not freely available for family history sites like what used to the James Watt Library that should include the 1911 transcriptions for Inverclyde (or whatever it was called beforehand).

Thanks, I was just double checking as things may have changed which I was unaware of.

I think Carole has answered your question but...

Swings & roundabouts really as there's certs. on SP which cost very little compared with certs. from GRO.

We can spend £10 on credits for SP & get 5 certificates which would cost us almost £10 each (£50) from GRO & with no hassle, downloadable there & then, no having to know exact dates/areas within x amount of yrs, with exact spellings (taking forever to find), no worry about correct spelling as they have variant options & no waiting for snail mail delivery i.e. a pleasant experience (my own view)  ;)

Can you post details of who/what you're looking for in Scotland with info. you have from previous census' etc. as (depending on what you're looking for) it may be possible to find them on the index?

There are other ways of finding info. too post 1901.

I'm sure there will be some who can give you some help if you post enough info.?

I find ScotlandsPeople one of the cheapest pay sites on the internet. For £7 you can buy 30 credits - and to download a certificate image costs 6 credits. Is there anywhere else where you can buy 5 certificates for £7. Where I live ONE certificate image costs a minimum of $20 - which currently equates to £12

You can search their indexes at no cost giving access to some data free of charge. Census images cost 6 credits, wills cost 10 credits. I have more source documents for my Scottish research than for any other country. They will also refund credits if there is a problem with a search/wrong image and if an image is illegible you can request a better scan.

The Irish reference here is that about commercial transcription sites such as Roots Ireland? Or the free online records such as the Irish RC parish records, civil records (births, marriages and deaths) and census records? I think commercial transcription sites like Roots Ireland are more exclusive and remote but the free Irish government sites such as Irish Genealogy ie, NLI, etc are more user friendly.
