Frederick Ribbans - m - Harriet ?? - Salop about 1830 ish
« on: Friday 03 November 17 11:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm looking for the marriage of a Frederick Ribbans to a Harriet (name unknown) about 1830 +/- 10 possible in Shropshire. Its a hunch only because that is where Harriet says she was born.

In the 1851 census I have a Frederick Bolingbroke Ribbans aged 50, school master in St.Peter Carmarthenshire with wife Harriet born in ??, Salop. Not sure where Frederick comes from as I can't make out PoB.

In the 1871 & 81  census they are in Clewer Berks as "annuitants" and Harriet's PoB is shown as Bishops Castle, Shropshire. Frederick's is shown as Norwich, Norfolk

Can anyone help in finding a marriage please?

I have found a marriage in Westminster, London between Frederick Ribbans and a Harriet Williams in 1824 but not sure these are the right couple.

Many thanks in advance for any help,

Alan

1841 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQB2-GCT

Looks likely the marriage may have been possibly pre 1820, Fredrick age around 21, if son?

Bapt Arabella - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N5BR-Y29

Hi Cas,

Thats a useful find of the 1841 census as it shows a son I wasn't aware of. This means their marriage
was earlier than I thought so I'll modify the search. The image of the '41 census doesn't show up on Anc..y at all. Just found it - seems its some school as there are a lot of scholars.

It was remiss of me for not listing Arabella's bapt. in 1826 which I only found this evening.

They seem to have moved around some.

Thanks for your help.

Hi all,

Many thanks. That is really promising with Ararbella's birth fitting in 1826 nicely.

I'll have to take time out to digest all this  as its nearly midnight where I am.

Alan,

You may already have this but........

in FindMyPast there is a newspaper item from the Suffolk Chronicle issue of 20 August 1821 which refers to the death of Rebecca Ribbans as follows:

"On Monday last, in her 27th year, Rebecca, wife of F.H.Ribbans, of the Lavenham Boarding School, and youngest daughter of Mr East, Postmaster there. She was ever dutiful to her parents, affectionately kind to her husband, child, and relations, meek and unassuming to all persons, and a pious member of the Established Church."

If nothing else, Rebecca's maiden surname of East explains why their son had the forename of East.

Additionally, and again you may already be aware of this, there are several references to both Frederick and his son in Welsh Newspapers Online [search via "ribbans"].

And then.......

also in FindMyPast is an item in the Ipswich Journal issue of 10 January 1824 which reports that:

"Lately was married in London, by the Rev J Williams, Mr Frederick Ribbans of the Lavenham School, to Miss Harriet Williams, daughter of Rev Owen Williams, late of Shrewsbury"

Hello willyam,

That is absolutely marvellous what you have found. I hadn't seen any of those reports and will try and find more.

My big problem is that there may be more Frederick Ribbans around; Frederick Henry, Frederick Bollingbroke etc and I'm just wondering if the two are completely separate.

I do have a marriage record for Frederick Ribbans marrying Harriet Williams in St.Marylebone, Westminster on 2-1-1824 but by Wm.Baker, Curate. in which he is listed as a bach not as a widower.

Where the name "Bollingbrook/bollingbroke" comes from I have no idea, a name he drops after the 1851 census.

This is all very useful so thank you very much.
