A surplus of Surplices
« on: Monday 06 November 17 13:17 GMT (UK) »
FreeReg gives me 3 Surplice's for Cambridgeshire

https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_queries/5a005d144325a60d7924dedf

The 1783 and 1788 baptisms appear to be for the same child in two separate villages which are 1.4 miles apart

1783 baptism. Kingston. All Saints and St Andrews
Father - Surplice
Mother - Ann

1788 baptism. Toft. St Andrew
Father - Surplice
Mother - Anne (with an "e")

The Methodist chapel wasn't open this early as far as I can tell.

So are these the same children baptised twice and why?

Then, rather than a surplus - I seem to have a Surplice missing. The Surplice Fuller baptised in 1707 would appear to be the father of the Kingston/Toft Surplice. And whist it's not impossible, the 1707 Surplice would be at least 76 when his son was baptised....this would certainly make him....vigorous....in his old age.

So is there are missing Surplice baptised between 1707 and 1783?

Amended to say - Just found this:

Toft Methodist Chapel

"The foundation stone for a Primitive Methodist Chapel in Toft was laid on 10th June 1862".

Are you sure that the first child didn't die and they named another child after him?

I did check FreeReg for burials between the two baptism dates but got no results.

CambridgeshireFHS have also transcribed the 1788 baptism and are inferring that the child was born that year - Birth date   ? ? 1788

A tree on Ancestry has the death of Surplice Fuller born 1783 as  1785  in Little Gransden, Cambridgeshire - but they don't give a source!

So it looks as if that explains why there was a second baptism - different child.  ;)

The Bury & Norwich Post 20 May1812 carried an advert re. the sale of
" ... that excellent PUBLIC HOUSE, at Toft aforesaid, called THE BULL ... And also an allotment of land at Kingston, very near the Public House ... In the occupation of Surplus Fuller, tenant at will ..."
