Mike is it somthing they fill in when they are there like at raf head quaters ? they dont do it at home do they ??

As I understand it, it is one of many forms to be filled in on their first day of arrival, the actual attestation is swearing allegiance to the king, seemingly in the presence of the "allegation officer",
Takes about five minutes, the rest of the day being spent filling in lots of forms, signing for uniform etc etc, although things may have been different in wartime.

Thr raf might have had a slightly more casual approach to formalities than the army, roumer has it that they had sheets and blankets as the main attraction  :) :) although I assume every recruit started out at a training centre.

I think you are reading too much into this, the question was not really who is your next of kin, but "who shall we tell when you get killed". said in a light-hearted way.
