Which census was he born Porthmadog and where was he living?  Added - OK - found it  :)

I see that they're both Ruabon in the 1901 census.

This might be way off the mark but the only William that might fit in 1851 is in the Wrexham  Workhouse at Bersham:

HO107/2503/848/10
William Davies, 3, b. Ruabon

Gadget

Hi that William aged 3 seems to be with a Thomas Davies 64 Widower and Margaret 34 unmarried
NB William has what appears to be Thomas crossed through and replaced by William

I saw that KB before I posted it  but decided that they might not necessarily be his parents.

I thought it was Grandfather and unmarried mother, there is an illegitimate birth that would fit.

I've checked all my Clwyd FHS  Ruabon and Rhosymedre  baptism records (more inclusive than FindMyPast) for around that time but nothing stands out - most of the fathers were either William or John.

Not all the records for 1861 for that area are available, including  my great grandfather, his brother and stepmother. So the 1871 is the next.

I've not pinpointed him on the 1881 so far - could you give the ref, please.

I've now checked Caernarfonshire, just in case, but can't find anyone that seems to match.  I see that his age does vary slightly.

I'm sure I found someone living with a grandmother called Jane but can't locate it now  :-\
