Hi All,

Just looked at the paternity cases in Haddington Sheriff Court, and there is an interesting one,

"Pursuer   Euphemia Robertson, Tranent
Defender   William Stevenson, Cinder Burner, Tranent
Year of Child's Birth   1838
Year of Court Case   1839
Sheriff Court   Haddington
County   East Lothian
NRS Reference   SC40/20/175/11
Notes    "

The dates are slightly earlier than your Alexander, however.

Tom
Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

Yes, I have that and Euphemia's name looks like Robinson, however on his death cert. it is Robertson.!

Lots of interesting theories and I can't wait to investigate, particularly the prison record! Roll on the weekend. Many Thanks.

Hi all.

It is beginning to look like it was indeed my Euphemia who was in prison in 1851, however I can't access any records for Edinburgh as they don't appear to be on line. Does anybody know if it's possible to find out any more information?

Many Thanks

Good Morning.

Still banging my head against this brick wall! EV, I think you are on the right track, however, I cannot find census records for Thomas and Euphemia during 1851 or 1861 anywhere! How did you access them on Free cen?I have their BMDs but cannot find the other info. - Can't understand why Scotlands People is drawing a blank. I have actually been in touch with another person who has Thomas in their tree, but they have no paper trail either. ??? I would be grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction!
Many Thanks,
Meggy

Hi Meggy ,

1851 Census https://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl transcription search using the following-
Thomas ARCHBALD(note spelling) age 42

Next search , Euphemia Robertson age 39 , once the 1st page comes up you'll need to press the next page button 3 times to find Euphemia and her daughter.

Quote
1861 Census SP index 652/2 10/ 24
Old Monkland , Lanark(birthplaces from Familysearch)
Euphemia Archibald 48(Midlothian)
George Archibald 18(Midlothian)
Thomas Archibald 16(Haddingtonshire East Lothian)
Alexander Archibald 13(Haddingtonshire East Lothian)
Marion Archibald 11(Haddingtonshire East Lothian)
Agness Archibald 7(Midlothian)

The 1861 Lanarkshire Census is NOT on FreeCen yet.

Scotlandspeople 1861 Census-

Age 48
Old Monkland
Lanark

Hi EV,

Found them! Thanks so much. I hadn't thought of Euphemia turning up in Old Monkland, but it appears to say that she was a visitor. I think it is her in prison, but am having difficulty proving it. I'm currently waiting to see if Edinburgh City Archives can shed any light on Prisoner Records. Perhaps I should just let sleeping dogs lie!

Many thanks again for your help,
Meggy
