Post-DDay food supplies?
« on: Saturday 11 November 17 18:45 GMT (UK) »
I am interested to find out how the troops, who survived the D-Day landings and thence pushed forward across France into Germany, were supplied with food and water etc.
Can anyone point me to relevant sources, publications, books?
Was there any immediate effective vitalling system or did the men just have to forage as they went along?
I visited Port-en-Bassen, near the American War Cemetery at Omaha beach. This little sea port was apparently used as the harbour for fuel supplies. Well worth a visit. ( it also has a beach made entirely of scallop shells and and unusual scallop " midden" where discarded shells have built up over the years)
Just wondering where all the food for the troops came from.

As with any war supplying the troops was a combination of foraging and a huge supply train. The supply train not only had to supply food and water but ammunition fuels and replacement men and equipment. One such plan was the Red Ball Express http://www.rootschat.com/links/01l1i/
Unable to use French deep water ports due to damage & mines the D-Day bridgeheads depended to a large extent on the two Mulberry harbours built on D-Day, unfortunately a storm on the 19 June severely damaged one (Mulberry "B" ) of these limiting the supply network.
