Need help finding wife of John Gattey (1730-1785)
« on: Tuesday 14 November 17 16:46 GMT (UK) »
Cannot seem to find John Gattey's wife's name and lineage.  Can anyone help?  Thanks.

Excerpt from his will reads:-

"John Gattey was born about 1730. He died in 1785.

Will dated 27 Dec 1784; proved 31 Jan 1785. Titled 'of St. Sidwells, Exeter, Baker." Leaves to wife - his property in said Parish; remainder to son Joseph. Mentions furniture in room where so Edward lodges. Daughters, Elia, wife of Richard Hopkins; and Susanna, wife of Shirley Woolmer, and Jemima Gattey. Sons: John and William Gattey. Grandchildren: Patience and John, children of said John. Refers to property in Paris Street, St. Sidwells. A notation in "Devonshire Wills" - THe atteys are believed to have come to Exeter from Cornwall. The son, Edward Gattey, was a solitor in Exeter, and was elected Town Clerk 10 Sep 1814l resigned 1836. His daughter married William, only brother of Sr. Francis Sykes, Bart. 17 Dec 1821, at Lympstone. His brother, Joseph, followed the trade of a builder. John Gattey was of the Cricklepitt Mills, Exeter, and died 5 Jun 1825. The Woolmers were long the proprietors of the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette. The property on Paris St. is still known as "Gattey's Court."

What about this as a possible second marriage

John Gattey/Patience Gattey Exeter 8 May 1771.

There is a marriage between a David Gattey and a Prudence Eastlake in Exeter in 1747. I can't find a death for David but it's possible that Patience was his widow.
