Family Search
Name   George Montague Cole
Event Type   Burial
Event Place   Bourke Shire, New South Wales, Australia
Age   57
Birth Year (Estimated)   1828
Death Date   12 Dec 1885
Cemetery   Bourke General Cemetery: Church of England section

The George Montague Cole I am looking for was born Islington, London 28 March 1828. Daughter Gertrude Wynne Cole believed to have been born in South Africa, however she WAS married and divorced in South Africa. Marriage #2 in London.

The above burial record is the ONLY Australian record  of George I can find. Could there be more references to his life in Australia? Other daughter of George is Mae. Possibly born in South Africa

There are a couple of other threads mentioning the COLE family in UK and South Africa.  Not very useful for this thread re George but may save some searching;

Thank you every one.

from Cando

The Port Elizabeth Telegraph and Commercial Gazette, a recently started newspaper, pronounced "equal to any in the Eastern District," has Mr. George Montagu Cole for its editor and proprietor. From Melbourne Argus, December 26 December 1848.

That means George Montague Cole from Islington, London was 20 years old when he is editor/proprietor. Highly unlikely. He daughter states he a deceased Bank Manger when she marries (for the second time) in 1889.

Back to the drawing board.

I think with all of your help there is good evidence that the George Montagu(e) Cole in South Africa and the one in Australia may not be the same person.
