I am continuing to research both Australia and South Africa. What is bothering me is :

The Port Elizabeth Telegraph and Commercial Gazette, a recently started newspaper, pronounced "equal to any in the Eastern District," has Mr. George Montagu Cole for its editor and proprietor. From Melbourne Argus, December 26 December 1848.

A twenty year old ???

If  everything works out then George Montague was born in England, married in South Africa and died in Australia.

The Royal Navy records confirm the birth date of Andrew Henry Farrell Duncan as 31 May 1855.

There are published records of sisters Mae Cole born 1860 and a Gertrude Wynne Cole born 10 August 1862 (where?). I believe that both were born in South Africa but no evidence yet. To anticipate the question where was Gertrude in 1891, 1901 and 1911 (Census) she was in British Guiana with her new husband Bernard Vidal Shaw. She may be on the 1921 Census but not released yet.

Is Mae and Mary the same ???

She is Mary here  :)

COLE Mary Cole  Born 27 Oct 1856  Baptised 1 Oct 1856
At Port Elizabeth Cape of Good Hope, South Africa
Father George Montague  Mother    Matilda Freeland
At St. Mary's Port Elizabeth
Witness 1    Henry Bailey Christian  Witness 2 Mary Christian
Witness 3    Parents
Source - Collection    St. Mary's Port Elizabeth Baptisms

Why couldn't an editor/proprietor of a new newspaper at the age of 20 be possible?

Not sure if this is another daughter:

"July 7, at St Cyprian's Church, Kimberley, South Africa, by the Rev Canon Gaul, MA, rector, Douglas, second son of Colin Turing Campbell Esq, retired Auditor General of Griqualand West, to Blanche Ashburnham, youngest daughter of George Montague Cole Esq."

John Bull, Saturday, August 29, 1885, Vol. LXV, Issue 3,380, p.554.

Is Mae and Mary the same ???

Mae's marriage in 1883:

"On the 21st June, by the Rev Canon Espin, at Grahamstown, Cape of Good Hope, Herbert Francis, youngest son of Henry Blaine of Knyena Lodge, Surbiton, to Mae, daughter of George Montagu Cole"

The Times, July 26, 1883, Issue 30882, p.1.

Thank you everyone for your great help. Gertrude Wynne Cole born 10 August 1862 (1939 Register) seems to have been born 1861. From information given, her mother, George Montague Cole's second wife Matilda Freeland Hogben Cole possibly died after giving birth to Gertrude about three weeks later on 28 August 1861).  And who was Wynne?

Again probably a witness at the christening. Gertrude would have been 77/78 in 1939 with no one or no paperwork to correct her. For George Montague Cole to have married again and had a child within one year seems unlikely.

Was George Montague Cole the one person who was born in Islington, London, lived in South Africa and died in Australia. I would say most likely.

The icing on the cake would be a christening date for Gertrude Wynne Shaw.

Isn't Matilda Freeland HOGBEN George's first wife whom he married in 1852?  He stated he was a bachelor when they married.

Have you searched familysearch.org yourself for Gertrude's birth/baptism?

Do you have any of this....
