My boo boo Cando.

It was George Montague Cole's brother Alfred Whaley Cole who married in England before arriving in South Africa. What an unfortunate marriage. With his background it was remarkable he did so well in South Africa.

http://archive.spectator.co.uk/article/8th-february-1851/7/in-the-insolvent-court-on-saturday-alfred-whaley-c

The wife was Eliza Hill Whitfield who married Alfred Whaley Cole 8 June 1850, Westminster, London.

Back to Gertrude Wynne Cole. In 1914 Mrs Gertrude Wynne Shaw is with her husband travelling to Demerara, British Guiana. She gives her age as 53 which gives her a birth year of 1861.The year her mother? died.

Gertrude Wynne  Shaw, formerly Dallas, born Cole died 10 June 1954 (English Will), Morden, Surrey, England. Age 93, Free BMD..(cando) That equates to a 1861 birth. I am suggesting that she WAS born 1861 and that HER mother was Matilda Freedland Hogben who probably died post partum 28 August 1861, Port Elizabeth. Although I would like a baptism of Gertrude Wynne Cole but it may be in the grief of the death of Matilda this was overlooked. It seems probable that the widower George Montague Cole re married to Decima Ashburnham (maddy 52) and the youngest daughter of George Montague Cole, Blanche Ashburnham Cole was the daughter of GMC and Decima Ashburnham.  Likewise the last child of Gertrude Wynne Dallas (formerly Cole) was the daughter of Seymour Dallas and his wife Gertrude Wynne Dallas was Blanche Seymour Dallas. Not Shaw as as published on the Internet. No one in their right mind calls their child  after the first husband in this case Seymour Dallas.

Name   Decima Cole Ashburnham
Event Type   Obituary
Event Date   30 Nov 1872
Event Place   Hastings, Sussex, England, United Kingdom (this is the father's residence not the death place)
Gender   Female
Age   31
Birth Year (Estimated)   1841
Father's Name   George William Ashburnham, Esq.

Should be Decima Ashburnham Cole in the American style but it was published. Thats the main thing.

Actual newspaper states died at the New Rush Diamond Fields,Cape of Good Hope.

So George Montague Cole married Decima Ashburnham about 1862/3. Not too long after his first wife's death. Married  second time for about 10 years before Decima's death.

I checked English/Welsh marriages just in case they married in England. Not married there. The question is who is Mary Cole born abt 1857. I cannot find any Mary Cole!

From the resources of the Bourke & District Historical Society’s Papers presented by its Members: Volume XII, page 303. (citing ‘Western Herald’ as the original source)

Mr George COLE of Bourke has discovered a cure for piles; no alcohol, take pills made from Burgundy pitch, plus purgatives.

Here’s the actual cutting:

We have been requested by Mr S Johnson of Oxley Street to publish for the benefit of the public generally, the receipt for the cure of piles, with which the late Mr George Cole, of this town, effected surprising cures …….

George Montague Cole, quite an unusual man who traveled around quite a lot.

Burgandy Pitch: A yellowish-brown resinous substance prepared from the exudation of the Norway Spruce.

Is the marriage between George Montague Cole and his second wife published anywhere?
And is there an entry in any of the newspapers giving Gertrude Wynne Cole's birth.
She could be the daughter of Matilda Freeland Hogben or she could be the daughter of Decima.Ashburton.
The day of her birth 10 August seems fixed. Whether she was born 1861 just before Matilda died or 1862 when George Montague Cole may have been remarried to Decima.

Good evidence on Decima's father.

I can't see a marriage notice. There is an obit for Decima's brother (John Woodgate ASHBURNHAM) which has quite a bit of information about her parents George William ASHBURNHAM and his much younger wife Hannah GLAZIER). Although Decima isn't listed amongst George's children, the author of the obit does admit the list is from his memory.  The obit notes that John Woodgate went to South Africa after the death of his parents around 1851.

Obit here if you have access:
Hastings and St Leonards Observer, Saturday, January 5, 1889, Issue 2622, p.3.

I could work out how to attach a copy if you would like.

Decima's birth: March qtr 1842 Hastings (7/364). John Woodgate's birth: March qtr 1840 Hastings (7/340).
