Harriet Murowe, born c1850, Toronto, Ontario
« on: Thursday 16 November 17 21:31 GMT (UK) »
I've not exhausted all tries, but so far, I cannot find out anything else about Harriet other than:

Harriet Murowe, born c1850, Toronto, Ontario [Information obtained from marriage record]
Married Robert Ovens 14 April 1872, Toronto, Ontario (Harriet was Single, age 22 years)
Religion:  English Church.  Married by:  Rev. A.J. (possibly Abraham James) Broughall
Her parents were: John and Catherine Murowe
Witnesses to her marriage:  Frederick Hawkes and Mary Ann Hawkes
Had two children:  Alice Maud and William
Died 11 April 1879, York (Toronto), Ontario

I would like to find Harriet on census returns (1851, 1861, 1871).  I've searched using variations of her maiden name such as Marrow and Morrow.  Any guidance appreciated.  [Note:  I have a lot of information about her children and the Ovens family, I am just looking for her prior to her marriage.]  Thank you, Lisa

Hi Lisa,

The daughter Alice Maud OVENS, I believe married Edward BOYNE?
I see also from the son William OVENS 's birth - his mother is listed as Harriet MUNRO

In the 1911 Census,
Alice and Edward BOYNE are in Toronto West, with their 2 daughters, and also on the house is:
Aunt: Catherine ELLISON widow, b Jan 1847 Ontario, age 64 (not 84?) Nurse to Private Family
Cousin: Catherine ELLISON single, b Nov 1874 Ontario, age 36

There is this 1861 Census: Goderich, Huron, Canada West
John FARRIS, 54, Labourer, b Ireland
Catherine FARRIS,40,  wife of J F, b England
Mary Ann MUNRO, 16, Spinster,
Catherine MUNRO, 14, child of C Farris
Harriet MUNRO , 10, child of C Farris
Martha MUNRO, 8, child of C Farris
Anna FARRIS, 1, child of J F
Julia FARRIS , 15 child of J F
ALL the children born Canada West

And there is this 1873 Marriage, Toronto:
On: 23 March 1873, Church of England
Joseph ELLISON, age  30, bachelor, b Toronto, of Toronto, Carpenter
Parents: William & Jane ELLISON
Catherine MUNRO , age 25, spinster, b Toronto, of Toronto
Parents: John & Catherine MUNRO
Witness: John WRENSHALL, Mary Ann WRENSHALL, Toronto

Just typing up Catherine ELLISON (nee MUNROE) in 1881 and 1891. I think she could be your Harriet's sister.

And if we could get a lead on Mary Ann WRENSHALL....

.....If we could find a lead back to the FARRIS family, that might clinch it all round!

Cheers

The WRENSHALL witness' to the marriage in 1873 of Catherine MUNROE to Joseph ELLISON - is more than most likely Catherine's sister Mary Ann and her husband John WRENSHALL.

Skip a few years to 1898, and here is the WRENSHALL's daughter marrying. It confirms Mary Ann was a MUNROE, and the Catherine ELLISON witness here is either Mary Ann's sister or her sister's daughter

MARRIAGE 1898: On 14 December at Toronto, Church of England
Groom: Alfred TAMBLING 28, of Toronto, b Barrie ON, bachelor, Carpenter
Parents: Thomas & Jane TAMBLING
Bride: Alice Jane WRENSHALL 24, of Toronto, b Streetsville, Toronto
Parents:  John WRENSHALL and Mary Ann MUNROE
Witness 1) Thomas C WOSLEY, of 8 Regent St
Witness 2) Catherine ELLISON, of 222 St Patricks

So that seems to conclude that your Harriet was a MUNRO(E) as we have her daughter Alice Maud OVENS BOYNE with an Aunt Cathrine ELLISON nee MUNROE who is tied to her own sister Mary Ann WRENSHALL nee MUNROE.

Now to get that FARRIS link  :)

Here we go.....not quite sure who John W FERRIS here is yet......but Martha looks like the 4th & youngest MUNROE sister from the 1861 FARRIS household in Goderich - with her WRENSHALL niece in 1881.

MARRIAGE 1870: On October 27th at
John W PHARIS 32, bachelor,  Hotelkeeper, of Waltondville(?), b Canadian
Parents: John PHARIS  & Judith PHARIS
Martha MUNROE 19, spinster, of Goderich, b Canadian
Parents :John MUNROE & Catherine MUNROE
Witness: Joseph BECK, Henry GALLAGHER

CENSUS 1871:  Goderich, Huron Ontario
John PHARRIS 33, Farming, married. Race: Irish
Martha PHARRIS 19, married Race: Scotch

CENSUS 1881: Goderich, Huron Ontario
John W FERRIS 43, Farming, Race: Irish
Martha FERRIS 28, Race: Scotch
Alice Jane WRENSHALL 6

John W PHARIS- could be an the older son of John FARIS who appears to be the stepfather of Martha  in 1861. Meaning, mother and daughter (Catherine snr & Martha) could have married a father and son (John snr and John W)?

On 9 Aug 1871 at Goderich, Julia PHARIS, 25, dau of John PHARIS and Julia PHARIS was married to Henry GALLAGHER. This looks like the elder FARISS daughter from the 1861 household

edit add: Julia died 1912, buried in Greenhill Cemetery, Lucknow Line , Lucknow, Ashfield Township, Huron ON.

Still not finding your Harriet in 1871, but!

Hi Ambly:

I am just leaving for a bit, but I would like to thank you so much for finding all of the information!  Yes, Alice did marry a Boyne, so you definitely found the correct family.  I can't wait until I get home to read your discoveries (I've only had a chance to glance at them).  Leaving this morning was pre-arranged so looking at all of the information will have to wait.  :'(  Again, thank you so much!  Lisa
