WW2 Royal Marine Engineer!
« on: Friday 17 November 17 12:06 GMT (UK) »
Very new to delving into the past and not sure where to start with this journey. Hoping someone out there can push me in the right direction as don't have much info to go on. My father I think was a Royal Marine in WW2. I have his war camera with R.M.E. on it with a No.. that's it! Hope Im posting in the right place.

You could try getting hold of his army records.

I got my grandfather's records from the MoD a few years back- next of kin has to sign for it (spouse if living, then children- I had to get my aunt to give permission in my case). You have his name, his department and with any luck that number is his service number (hopefully the camera is actually his! We've got a medal upstairs and we have no idea who it belongs to or why we've got it...). I assume you have his date and place of birth and date and place of death too?

Bear in mind that there is a long wait for a response- it took them 11 months to send mine through.

Are you sure it says R.M.E. & not R.E.M.E. (Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers) Doesn't really make any difference to getting his service record as it's not needed.
