Help needed in finding the family of Catherine Williams
« on: Monday 20 November 17 14:54 GMT (UK) »
I'm struggling to find the birth family of Catherine Williams born 8/2/1868 Penmachno and would be so grateful for any assistance. I got her DOB from the 1939 Register where she was living at Penmachno. On the GRO website there are 3 Catherine Williams born 1868 Llanrwst, Denbighshire which was the registration district for Penmachno. There were 2 born in the DQ mother's maiden names Kerry & Roberts and 1 in the JQ mother's maiden name Hughes so none of those appear to be the correct one, as she was born February. Catherine married William Pierce 1895 again registered in Llanrwst but they lived in Penmachno. I'm hoping to be able to find Catherine's family without having to buy the Marriage Certificate so any help would be much appreciated.

The exact date of birth may not be accurate.  Also possible she may have been married previous to 1895 so Williams wouldn't be her birth name.

Did they have children whose births you can check the mothers maiden name against - just to make sure it was Williams  :)

The Jun quarter birth is the closest as it would run from April - June so a birth in Feb registered later would fall into that quarter.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

This has her b 1867 but an estimate, you can request a clearer image of the stone, to see if confirms DOB.

Think you may need the info from marriage. 1871 have 2 possible families both bc 1867 in area.

One bc 1866

Milliepede I have looked for both children John and Thomas born 1897 but can't find their births on GRO. You could be right about the wrong DOB on the 1939 Register as the link to Catherine's headstone Cas has given states she died 1942 age 75 so would have been born 1867, I have had another look at GRO but no births registered in that year in Llanrwst.
Thanks so much for all those links to the Census Cas, that narrows it down a bit.

Possible?
PIERCE, THOMAS    Mmn   WILLIAMS
GRO Reference: 1897  J Quarter in LLANRWST UNION  Volume 11B  Page 339

For ref 1901
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9BN-FLZ

Possible?
Name:   Mother's Maiden Surname:
PIERCE, JOHN  DAVID  mmn   WILLIAMS
GRO Reference: 1898  S Quarter in LLANRWST UNION  Volume 11B  Page 343

Death - PIERCE, JOHN  DAVID  age    4 mths ?
GRO Reference: 1898  D Quarter in LLANRWST UNION  Volume 11B  Page 241

Headstone detail could be mistranscribed wrongly. Would maybe request a clearer copy of stone, could be DOB?

Think this maybe a good possibility

WILLIAMS, CATHERINE    Mmn   RICHARDS
GRO Reference: 1867  M Quarter in LLANRWST UNION  Volume 11B  Page 398

There are a few possible marriages for Williams/Richards in Llanrwst reg district

All children have mmn Richards in this census

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5PT-J1X

Possible?
Marriages Dec Q 1864
Jones    Hannah        Llanrwst    11b   714
Jones    John        Llanrwst    11b   714
Richards    Elizabeth        Llanrwst    11b   714     ****
Williams    John        Llanrwst    11b   714     ****

Think you still need marriage cert for Catherine/William to confirm possible father..witness & address may help also. Never hardly any shortcuts in Welsh FH.  :(

Thanks Cas looks like a very good find for Catherine's birth family. I requested a clearer photograph of the headstone as you suggested and it states John Pierce died 27th October 1898 age 4 months. It didn't state David as a middle name on the inscription, but I'm sure you have the right birth & death index. Do you happen to know if marriage registers go to The Archive and if so who holds the ones for Denbighshire bearing in mind Penmachno & Llanrwst are now in Conwy County?

Thanks again for all your help Cas,

Ellen

Thanks Gadget for that info, I was hoping if I went to the Archive they may have a copy of the marriage details for Penmachno for that time so I wouldn't have to pay for a certificate  ;)
