David Stirrick/Sterrick killed in Sunderland Feb. 1859
« on: Tuesday 21 November 17 16:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello there

David Stirrick/Sterrick aged 34 years a Ship's Carpenter was killed in a Sunderland shipyard 10th February 1859. He was lodging in Sunderland the inquest states he was a native of Arbroath and his wife and two children were residing there. As part of my research into deaths in Sunderland shipyards I also try to find where these men and boys are laid to rest. Cannot find a burial in Sunderland, so I am assuming his body was returned to Arbroath. Is there anyone researching this family or someone who may know where he is buried?

Would be more than grateful for any help resolving this.

Thanks

Thanks for replying so quickly, I did check the Mere Knoll index but must admit I did not give the surname Sturrock a thought.

Thanks again

There is a possible Davd Sturrock that might fit. From the 1851 census:

David Sturrock 26 Ship's Carpenter b. Aberdeen
Barbara Sturrock 25 b. Inverkeillor, Forfarshire

Address: Lady Bridge, Arbroath

This couple married in 1851 in Arbroath in 1851 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTRJ-KZ6

They had at least four children but two died young;

Elizabeth 1853 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XBCM-GZ4

Alexander 1854 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XBCZ-331

James 1856 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYBH-QJN died in 1857

Lavinia 1858 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY5V-T5Q died in 1858

Barbara in the 1861 census:

Mrs Darid Sturrock 34 lodging house keeper b. Arbroath
Elisabeth Sturrock 8 b. Arbroath
Alexander Sturrock 6 b. Arbroath
Elisabeth Wallace 66 mother b. Arbroath
Andrew Lowson 18 boarder
John Donaldson 24 boarder

Address: 69 Lady Coan, Arbroath

I can't check Barbara's marital status on the transcript I am looking at to check whether she shows as a widow...

Probably Lady Loan.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
