Aahh Lu you must be such a busy girl, had a look at some of the other lines of enquiries you are helping people with.

Your info so far is maybe explaining why a 23 year old from a large rural Scottish family decides to go to the opposite side of the world, do you think that she was following a love interest that for one reason or another didn't work out ? so sad if this was the attraction to NZ (or Aotearoa as I've learned) and apparently passing so young. Its these circumstances (or is it what we want to imagine) that makes finding out about the past so intoxicating.

Can't wait for the next instalment !  :)  Alec F

That's ok Lu, there is no hurry, we may not find that person who was looking for the connection as a few years have slipped by, but it would be good to discover some more about Marys journey. Its also rekindled my interest in our past generations, we know that Mary had brothers/sisters who went to Alberta in Canada and my wife also has Tolmie second/third cousins in NZ but like I mentioned earlier I'm planning on delving into them next year when retirement arrives.

Thanks again for your endeavours and although I'm not yet experienced in genealogy if there is anything I can help you with in the NE of Scotland just ask.

Hello.

Just a quick look now brings up some 79 references to that surname in the ARCHWAY listings.

Hi Alec

A further update for you.   ;)
Archives New Zealand have just replied to a request I sent them, and advise they have now located the Divorce file for the Mary, nee GIBB, I spoke of earlier.  This file will also have the Marriage record annexed and so should deliver us a good deal of information.    I hope to be able to view this next week and will get back to you then.

Hi Lu, hope you are well. If you remember you were hoping to find some more info re Mary Gibb, I'm not sure if you sent something which went missing or maybe I deleted by mistake. If you have been just too busy then no problem, I just wondered if I missed your reply.  :)

Hi, Mary Gibb, was my granny Margaret Allan (nee Gibb) sister, when my granny was very ill she spoke of her sister Mary, who ran off with a man that wasn't suited , to NZ , it was the first time any of our family had heard of Mary as it was apparently a scandal to speak of Mary.
Cousins from Aberdeen did get in touch with Mary son ,a letter was sent , but I think they didn't keep in touch, as he didn't say much about his mother. Hope this helps , Jenny A  :o

Hi Jenny, sorry I've been so long replying, was on holiday when your mail came in and it got lost down at the bottom of the in box. Nick Gibb told me about some of his uncles who went to North America but don't think he mentioned Mary so when I saw the original entry on "curiousfox" I had to investigate. Hi Jenny, and welcome to RootsChat :)

Can I encourage you to post once more (just a couple of smiley's will be fine), as this will activate your Personal Message (PM) facility and allow Alec and others to contact you privately.
