1861/1871 Lookup please
« on: Wednesday 03 August 05 21:22 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to find a family by the name of EDMUNDSON (and variants) in the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

They apparently came from Ireland (Coleraine), but i don't know when. It appears it was post 1851. The father was a cabinet maker. There should be a daughter, Mary Jane, born approx 1847.

The father is supposed to have worked for Waring and Gillows so they may have been based in Lancaster, but I'm really not sure.

Mary Jane married an Edward Huston and lived (and probably died) in Liverpool.

Many Thanks,
Sam

You would need to provide more clues.
There are nearly 2,000 edmundsen (and variant) in Lancashire 1861.
Q's:
How can you know that the father was a cabinet maker, yet not mention a name?
When for example , did Mary marry this Edward Huston?
What other detials have you from the marriage?

Pauline

Hi,

It is according to family history obtained after talking to older relatives that Mary Jane's father was a cabinet maker. From looking at Waring and Gillows archive information, Robert and Richard are possibilities.

I understand that there must be lost of Edmundsons in 1861 (and 1871), but is it possible to carry out a search by specifying occupation? This must surely narrow down the results.

I have not yet been able to find the wedding certificate for Edward Huston and Mary Jane. They do, however, appear in the 1881 census married to each other. In the 1881 census, Mary Jane is 34 and Edward Huston 38.

Hope this helps a bit.

Sam

Steady on -I did ask politely, I'm not sure there's any need to be so abrupt.

The only Mary Edmunds born Ireland in the time frame was the following.

1861 census
Source information:    RG9/2834
Registration district:    Bolton
Sub-registration district:    Bolton Western
ED, institution, or vessel:    16g
Folio:    60
Page:    40

address 42 Spring Gardens Bolton Lancashire
Patrick O'Brien Head age 37 (can't make out occupation) born Ireland
Ann wife age 40 born Ireland
Catherine daughter age 8 born Ireland
Patrick Edmundson stepson age 22 basket maker born Ireland
William Edmundson stepson age 17 iron moulder born Ireland
Ann Edmundson stepdaughter age 19 cotton carder born Ireland
Mary Edmundson stepdaughter age 14 cotton carder born Ireland

I know this does not help you with Mary Jane's father but if you think this could be the family you could look for a birth of Mary Jane to an Anne in the Irish records this would hopfully give you her father's name.

It might be an idea to post a request for a lookup on the Ireland board

Sorry I could not be more help.

Thanks for your help.

Even these negative results tell us something!

I'll carry on and look again for the marriage certificate of Mary Jane and Edward.

Thanks again,

Sam

I've just tried to look for the birth/baptism of
Mary Edmundson.

And the nearest match I have found is

Maria Edmondson 19 March 1848
Father John and Mother Elizabeth.

Have you found Mary on any Census?
