Help me 'kill off' my step 3x grt grandfather
« on: Tuesday 05 December 17 12:05 GMT (UK) »
I am struggling to find a death for my 3x grt grandmother's second husband.

This is what I have for him so far:

George Maycock (born England c1831) marries Jessie Campbell of McPherson in February 1860 at Arderseir Manse.  In November that year their daughter junior was born.  At the time of the 1861 census Jessie was living at the croft at Arderseir with the children and George (a soldier)  is at the barracks at Edinburgh Castle.  In 1864 he is out of the army and is sentence to 6 years for sheep stealing.  The case was head at court in Inverness.

I cannot find a death for him.  I have searched SP for deaths of a George M*cock from 1864 until 1930 but cannot find a death in Scotland.

Where now?

Oh sorry I forgot to add in 1871 Jessie is living in Nairn has reverted to the surname Campbell (first married name and is listed as a widow.  All records from then onwards she is Campbell and when she dies in 1896 she is Jessie Campbell, nee Macpherson, widow of John Campbell, no mention of George.  The informant was her son Alexander.  Alexander was also the witness against George in 1864.

pharmaT,

Have you been able to find his military records? Just wondering if they state where he was born. If so, have you checked the census, etc., to see if perhaps he went to England or elsewhere after he left prison?

Regards,
Josephine

George appears to have been released on license from Chatham Prison at the end of 1869.

Do you know where George was born?
What were the names of his parents?

It was in the prison records on FindMyPast. Interestingly there is a George Maycock in Chatham in 1871 but he is shown as age 36 ( so age doesn't quite match). There is a Sophia Smith age 19 in the same household. By 1881 George has married her and they have a daughter.

He was born in England, that's all I can say for sure. in his marriage cert he says his parents were George and Mary.
