sullivan and murphy
« on: Thursday 07 December 17 15:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Need some assistance please

My g x 2 grandfather Michael Sullivan was born in Merthyr Tydfil circa 1862 to

Daniel Sullivan born about 1823 Castletown co cork and Mary ( Abbott ) born about 1831

Michael was married after 1881 as I have found him in 1881 census with his mother and brothers
By this time his father looks to have passed away has the head of household is shown as john sullivan ( so his father Daniel looks to have died between 1871 and 1881 )

I am trying to find who Michael married
We were told Mary was murphy but had married about 2 or 3 times ??

When Michael died about 1896 his wife married again my great grandfather born circa 1886 is living with his mother who has married after Michaels death

A bit of a saga

Best regards Phil

One of his children's births will give you the maiden name of Mary - is that where Murphy has come from?

I take the point she may have had more than one husband.

It's odd that Mary is shown as the wife of John and he is also called Sullivan - is this a different man as certain details match with Daniel - have you got a death for father Daniel.

There are a few marriages in Merthyr 1881-1891 where possible brides are called Mary  :-\

Can you give details from the 1891 for Michael and Mary with any children please.

Was your great grandfather John?

There are 2 births Merthyr Dec 1887 - one has no mothers name the other has Sullivan which could lead to the marriage in Dec 1885 to Mary Sullivan but just speculating.

In which case Nora could be Honora Mar 1890 mothers name Sullivan

Well I got hold of another cousin who gave me the following

Daniel Sullivan. ( Michaels dad ) born in 1823 cork died in Merthyr Tydfil 3/1/1875 aged 51
Married Mary Abbott in adrigole cork 1849

Michael born 26/10/1862 Merthyr Tydfil
Died 1898 Merthyr Tydfil aged 37

Married ???
To Mary ???

My great grandfather was known both as john and William Sullivan born 1883 Merthyr Tydfil

Married 1906 Merthyr Tydfil

To Mary Ann jarrett

So its who Michaels wife Mary we ate trying to find

If she was a murphy

So as I said the births of the children of Michael and Mary will give her maiden name - is this where Murphy came from?

Was it John and Nora (Honora) as suggested earlier with mothers name Sullivan or is this not the right family?

Any brothers and sisters of your great grandfather will corroborate the mothers maiden name.

I take the point Mary may have married more than once but this will be a starting point.
