For years I have been trying to find the marriage of David Henry Barlow and Emma Jefferys, and the birth registration of their first daughter, Sarah.

Now that the new GRO index is available, I suspect Sarah was registered as Sarah Jefferys Q4 1870 at Sheffield.

In 1881 they were at 24 Lionel Street, Liverpool [RG11/3630/65/18]
David H Barlow  30 born Aldworth Berks
Emma Barlow  29 born Hull
Sarah Barlow  9 born Sheffield
Clara Barlow  5 born Liverpool
Emma Barlow  3 born Liverpool
Henry Barlow  7 mths Liverpool

I got Emma’s maiden name from Henry’s birth certificate (registered as Harry).

In 1871, Emma was with her parents, William and Eliza, and lots of siblings - and her own daughter? - at 9 Victoria Terrace, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield [RG10/4693/15/23].

I managed to trace some of David and Emma's daughters forward, but the parents just disappeared.

However, a few weeks ago, just doing a random search, I found Emma in the register of female prisoners at Wakefield Prison for 1894.  Her details say she was aged 41, an ag labourer, widowed, maiden name Jeffreys and born in Hull.  Bingo !

If anyone can help with the marriage – and what became of Emma – I would be very grateful.

Have you considered they may never have married.  I have seen many queries looking for marriages and there simply never was one to find :)

I see the 3 sisters Sarah - Clara - Emma are living together in 1891.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Hello Millie - there is that possibility, of course. But there is always the nagging doubt that it's just waiting to be found somewhere.

Yes, the girls seem to have married quite respectably - which made me surprised that their mother Emma was described as a tramp in a newspaper report of her 1894 trial.

I wish I could find her and David in 1891 as well.

One of my relatives didn't marry after she had an earleir illegitimate child by a different man.  Maybe they just didn't think it was necessary  :-\

Also found a daughter Julia

Not sure whether it is the same David Henry Barlow - FindMyPast have a military record for D H B said to be born in the parish of Stockcross, Newbury.  He was only in the Army for a couple of years - 15 February 1868 - 11 January 1870.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!

Thanks BumbleB, yes that's him although he took 3/4 years off his age.

He was in Sheffield in 1861 and Stockcross near Newbury in 1871.

There appear to be more children. The report of Emma's trial ends

"The Bench committed the prisoner to gaol for 14 days, and two children, who were with her (one of them being at the breast) , were ordered to be taken into the workhouse until her release."    Wharfedale & Airedale Observer 31 August 1894
