Godmother of Thomas McDaniel
« on: Saturday 09 December 17 03:19 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I'm wondering if there may be any clarification regarding the sponsors in this bap. record from Borris, Carlow. The Godmother has the same name as the mother (Judy Cody). Is it possible the grandmother (mother of mother) was the sponsor? I suppose she could have been a cousin of Mother, but I'm curious to find out if others have run into this.
Thanks, and Merry Christmas!!

Hi, Yes the Mother, Father or a cousin.
My Grandfather was my Sponsor and my Cousin as well.
The Baby was always Baptised with in Days or Hours, no big Christenings in those days.

Thanks Maggsie!
I'll have another go at the parish records to see if I can find anything on Judy Cody, Raheendarragh or James McDonald (I know this record has surname as McDaniel but I'm quite certain they are my McDonalds). My hunch is the sponsor Judy is grandmother, but until I can verify......
Thanks again!
Steve

I might have asked you this before, I've been meaning to make a list of dates the name changed but never got around to it.
Have you got an approx date when your McDaniels changed to McDonald?

My lot changed to McDonnell, first instance 1883.

Hi Sinann,
I never considered the possibility that they changed the name. Thomas' baptism (above) has the surname as McDaniel, but his sister, Elinor's bap record from 3 years earlier (1787) had McDonald as surname. Then another sister's record has McDaniel 3 years later (1793), and the final record (John) has McDonnell! I'm 99% sure it's the same family-father always John and mother Judy Cody in all 4 records. And all in the same very small townland.
I get the feeling the priest took liberty with the name when recording it. Although, the handwriting looks the same for all 4 entries.
Where are your McDonalds from?

Thanks Phenmark,
Yours seem a bit different.
Mine are Westmeath, I've seen another poster with McDaniel's changing to McDonnell or McDonald in Wicklow or possibly Wexford. I have a feeling there was another one. I wish I'd make a note or bookmarked them at the time.
They were all  dropping the McDaniel and I was wondering if something happened to cause this which is why I was trying to pin down a time, even land records for mine lot change
Yours are a bit different, a lot earlier and a mix of both, more likely as you say a priest using what even took his fancy on the day.
