James Douglas of Jedburgh
« on: Friday 15 December 17 01:52 GMT (UK) »
In the Testamentary papers of Margaret Douglas, daughter of the deceased James Douglas, merchant and provost of Jedburgh, and wife of William Knox, of Mayshiell 29 Mar. 1786.
Her son in law Thomas Pringle, refers to a disposition and deed of settlement dated thirteenth day of July One thousand seven hundred and fourty seven years,  registered in the court books of Jedburgh 5th February 1749, burdened son and Heir John Douglas,  with the payment to the said Margaret Douglas of 100 pounds Sterling,  of additional provision to her over and above what was provided to her by her contract of marriage.
Does anybody know if these records would survive and how and where to obtain copies or typescript.
There seems to be no testamentary papers for either James Douglas or his son John?
There were several James Douglas's in Jedburgh about this time.
Cheers Colin

Hi
There is a good chance that something has survived but it could be a time-consuming search.  At that date, I would begin searching in the Commissary Court although if nothing was found, it would be wise to continue on to the Sherriff Court. This has to be a search in the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh. If you do not have a Readers Ticket, take a photograph and photo-ID with you on your first visit.

All the indexes are online and most of these will, be stored off-site which means ordering in advance. Good news is that you are allowed to use a camera and there is even a camera rig to help you get a good image.

Best wishes
