Stretton
« on: Friday 15 December 17 08:57 GMT (UK) »
Folks,
William Stretton b 1840 in Yaxley is living with his family in 1841 and 1851 but disappears before 1861 census.
England & Wales Criminal Registers 1791-1892 show a William Stretton tried at Huntingdon Assizes on 11 Mar 1858 on a charge of Arson and sentenced to six years, which i feel would have earned him a trip to Australia.
I am hoping someone has access to newspapers to confirm this is my man.
To date i have only checked for arrival in Tasmania as that was where his father was shipped 12 years earlier.
Regards,
Eric

If you can get access to Findmypast via a local library there are quite a lot of entries for William Stretton, including a Police mugshot. Apparently he was sentenced to six years Penal Servitude and released on Licence in 1863.

A couple of other possible mentions of William after his release:

“NORMAN CROSS …
Stealing wool – William Stretton, labourer of Yaxley, was charged by Mr Thomas Southwell, farmer, of Stilton, with stealing one pennyworth of wool on the 5th instant. - The defendant was discharged.”

Cambridge Independent Press, Saturday, March 16, 1867, Vol. LXII, Issue 2678, p.6.

“NORMAN CROSS PETTY SESSIONS …
Paid – William Stretton, of Yaxley, an old offender, was brought up by pc Wright charged on suspicion of stealing a fowl, the property of some person unknown. The constable said he had made every inquiry, but was unable to find an owner. The prisoner was, therefore, discharged.”

Cambridge Independent Press, Saturday, December 30, 1871, Vol. LXIV, Issue 2928, p.7.

Thank you all.
His father,William, was transported in 1846 to Tasmania, still to find what became of him.
1861 census looks to be him,off to 1871 now.
Margaret, what is C.A.L.M.,not come across it before? And not available online?

Just in case you haven't seen it, a report of his trial in the Stamford Mercury, Friday, March 20, 1846, Vol. 151, Issue 7875, p.2.

 Modified to add:
Along with John SKELLETT and William STRETTON, 3 others were charged, but not tried: Jos. STRETTON, John ROBINETT and Rebecca DICKINS.

Another possible sighting of William jnr after his release from prison:

"Norman Cross Petty Sessions, Dec 19, before Lord Sherard and the Rev G Heathcote, - William Stretton, of Yaxley, an old offender, apprehended on a warrant by sergt. Allen, was charged with using snares for the purpose of taking hares at Orton Longueville on the 6th of September. Fined 2l and 13s. 6d, costs - paid."

Stamford Mercury, Friday, December 22, 1876, Vol. 181, Issue 9479, p.5.

Modified to add:
And another in Jan 1880 - sent to prison for 9 months

"Wm and Robt Stretton, of Yaxley, were convicted of stealing three sheepskins, at Woodstone, the property of Richard and William Jones, on the 13th December.  - The skins hung in a cart shed, and although the prisoners were not seen to take them, they were found in their possession and conclusively identified as the prosecutors'. - William Stretton has already been convicted four times, and he was now sentenced to nine months' imprisonment; Robert was sentenced to six weeks' imprisonment."

Stamford Mercury, Friday, January 9, 1880, Vol. 186, Issue 9638, p.6.
