Ordering document from the National Archives
« on: Saturday 16 December 17 22:04 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone ordered a document from the National Archives?

I have looked in http://www.nationalarchives.ie/services/service-for-our-visitors/obtain-copies-of-archives/ to find out how to do it, but am uncertain about the cost and whether it would be better to ask a professional researcher in Dublin to obtain it rather than order it myself.

The document I am interested in is
Private William McAlarney, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers: desertion (TSCH/3/S3289)
Sep 1923-Nov 1923, file

http://www.nationalarchives.ie/visit-us/contact-us/  to contact them and ask about cost.

Digital images are cheapest with no postal cost involved.

Thank you. I shall contact them to ask about the cost.

Yes, I had looked in the Military Archives website but couldn't find him there; I may contact them, too, about him.

Aren't the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers a British Army regiment? Surprising enough to see him in the National Archives of Ireland, but why would the Irish Army have anything on him?
What am I missing here....

as far as I know the last British Army base to vacate Ireland when it was the Free State was in 1938.

From the Militaryarchives.ie " Once the Truce had been signed, the first barracks to be evacuated was at Clogheen, on 25th January, 1922.  The last military post to be handed over to the Irish Free State (excluding the treaty ports in 1939) was the Royal (now Collins) Barracks in Dublin, on 17th December, 1922."
