I'd also like to figure out what relation Frederick Jervis (Emily's father) and James Jervis (Her mother Maria's late husband) were to each other but I can't work it out.

I have searched for Frederick/Fred with no success. His birthplace is different to that of James and I wonder was the name in error or fabricated. The census layout is unusual with Maria first and Frederick last as head.

He's on Emily's birth certificate as Frederick Jervis though - is it possible they would have fabricated both that and the census for some reason?

What if he was already married?
It does seem possible that he might have been using Maria's name, especially if no link to James Jervis can be found.

I am wondering if the man we see with Maria in 1891, the bricklayer's labourer born Bermondsey, might have been Frederick Arthur Roffey.
Emily's marriage in 1919 was witnessed by Percy Leonard Victor Roffey.
Percy was the son of Henry Alfred Roffey and Julia Winters (married 1879).
Henry Roffey was the son of George and Eliza Roffey, and was born in Bermondsey.
In 1861 in Bermondsey, Henry Roffey was 6 years old, and the youngest child in the family was Frederick, 1. The family are in the bricklaying line.

Anyway, in 1871 Frederick seems to be in the Sutton District School.
On Christmas Day 1881, in Hammersmith, Frederick Arthur Roffey, 21, Labourer, son of George, Bricklayer, married Sarah Maria Barratt.

And in 1891, Sarah M Roffey, 30 (I think), is in Hammersmith, married, with three children. But no husband there. I can't find Frederick at all in 1891.

Later, Frederick Roffey gets really naughty. He married Ann Susannah Mitchell in Islington, June qtr 1898, and was convicted of bigamy!

So, is there any chance that Emily Jervis and her marriage witness Percy Roffey were cousins?
John

I have been searching for such a situation John  :)

I had looked for Freds born Bermondsey but too many to really identify.

I think it is. He may not actually be married to her though (if he had any sense!)
His details are very like those of Mr Gervis in 1891.
But you are right, no Emily with him.

Yes, there were lots of Freds from Bermondsey.
We have to hope that Percy Roffey knew Emily, and wasn't just a friend of her husband!

You may well be on  to something, Jon.   A search for Frederick Roffey in the newspaper archive comes up with this:

South London Chronicle 2 Jan 1897

Alleged Serious Assault

Frederick Roffey, 36, a labourer of Webber Street was charged on Wednesday with violently assaulting Maria Jervis, by striking her on the face and kicking her in the head. Detective- sergeant Wright, L Division, stated that the woman was still in St Thomas's Hospital in a somewhat dangerous condition. When witness arrested prisoner he admitted striking her, and he was very sorry she was hurt. Mr Slade remanded prisoner, and consented to take substantial bail.
