Steel Family
« on: Saturday 23 December 17 14:19 GMT (UK) »
I would appreciate some assistance in tracing the following family from the last census (1901) in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England.

1) William Steel, born 1849 at Chard, Somerset, son of James and Mary Steel
2) Henrietta L (wife) 1856 Bromley Le Boy, Middlesex
3) Ida L.A (daughter) 1885 New South Wales
4) Dorothy Irene (daughter) 1886 New South Wales
5) Magnus H (son) 1888 New South Wales
6) Lorna M. (daughter) 1890 New South Wales.

The only information I have about the children is from the Sydney Morning Herald of August 6,1963 which stated " Dorothy Irene Steel died August 1963 at her residence 1 Prince Albert Street, Mosman. Beloved sister of Ida (deceased) , Magnus H and Lorna M. Steel. From this it is obvious that Ida had died sometime before 1963 and her siblings Magnus and Lorna were still alive in 1963.

Records for Tunbridge Wells show that James Steel and  Edward John Hatter (born 1843 at Remenham, Berkshire) were dairymen and operated a dairy in Tunbridge Wells at 30 Mount Ephraim. They are found in directories of 1899 and 1903 there but not in 1890 or 1913.The business is listed  as Hatter & Steel, dairymen 30 Mount Ephraim. It is known that Hatter & Steel's dairy was taken over in 1906 by John Brown's dairy and so one can conclude that the Steel family had left Australia sometime after the birth of the last child in 1890 and moved to Tunbridge Wells by 1899 and set up the dairy and that at least Dorothy Steel who died in 1963 had moved back to Australia. It would appear that the whole family left Tunbridge Wells and moved back to Australia but I cant find any records.

I can find no 1911 census for this family in England or any death records for them in England.

I would like to find out the following
1) when and on what ship did William Steel emigrate to Australia on and where did the family settle
2) the marriage record between William and Henrietta
3) what happened to Williams wife (date and place of death) and what happened to his other children.

Any family photos would be of help also.

Could William and Henrietta have married in the UK? There is the following group:

Marriages Dec 1883  -  W.Ham
GYDE Hannah Rebecca
HOOPER William Francis
JEFFREYS Henrietta Louisa
STEEL William

A Henrietta Louisa Jeffreys (Mothers Maiden Name: Johnson) had her birth registered in Poplar (Union)  Q#2 1856. This fits with the 1901 census.

Note: Baptisms and confirmation of Henrietta's maiden name are on Familysearch:

Hi,
Sorry it took a while to find the return to Australia.
They returned on the 31st May 1907 on the ship called Omrah.

In the 1913 Sydney directory, William’s address was already 1 Prince Albert st Mosman ... The family would have lived at the same address for over 50 years!!
