Help with Shipping Records
« on: Monday 25 December 17 19:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for your help in trying to find my great grandparents on any shipping or immigration records in Ireland or the US.

Michael Farrell (born Christmas day 1866, I am 99% sure to Michael Farrell and Jane Kelly/Kealy) married Julia Whelan in Enniscorthy on 27th April 1896 (daughter of Patrick Whelan and Julia Cowman) and they emigrated to the US.  Julia returned to Ireland and her son, my grandfather Patrick Farrell, was born in Island Road, Enniscorthy on 25th April 1900.  Julia never returned to the US and her husband never returned to Ireland.  So there is a short window where they could have travelled... both going to the US after April 1896, and her returning to Ireland prior to April 1900.

However, I haven't managed to locate them on any shipping records.  I am quite familiar with tracking people in Ireland but not great at abroad and wondering if someone out there might be able to help....

Warm wishes, and Happy Christmas

Sandra,Dublin  ;)

If you can find Michael in a US Census in may give his emigration date.
Looking at the Irish Census
Julia says she had two children one living, assuming the child that died was her husband's child it would likely have been born in the US if they traveled soon after the marriage, so if this child could be found it would help narrow down where they were living and the date of travel, same date wise applies if it was born in Ireland.
1901

1911

Patrick was born April 1900 so Julia had left America before the 1900 Census there in June.
It doesn't say on Patrick's birth cert that his father is in America

Hi Sinann,

Thanks for your response.

Yes I have those census records and birth cert doesn't say he was in America so the dates that there were in America is unclear.

I was hoping the shipping records would be clearer.  There are references to an M O'Farrell and J O'Farrell but all it says is that they were from Ireland - nothing more specific so as there are a few entries hard to say if it is them or not.

I thought shipping records / emmigration records would be clearer.

The quest continues...

Warm wishes

Sandra

The birth certificate for Patrick gives the occupation of Michael Farrell as horse trainer.

There is a New York Passenger List - Michael Farrell born 1866 and aged 34 years - Liverpool to New York on the Teutonic - arriving 4 October 1900 - crosses to and fro with horses to New York.  Frank Dibb is the foreman and Michael Farrell (described as US citizen)  is listed with 6 other men doing the same thing.

Julia never returned to the US and her husband never returned to Ireland.

Are you sure that Michael never returned to Ireland?  I am wondering if he returned to Ireland but not to his family.

There are several US census records for Michael FARREL (including spelling variants), many of which can be eliminated, but there are also several death registrations in Ireland for a Michael born 1866.  The only death for Michael son of Patrick I have so far found in the US is in Dayton Ohio 1941 but the birth date is 3 Aug 1861.
